THE BRIDE THEY LOOKED DOWN ON
Chapter 1 — The Wife No One Wanted
When Elena Carter walked into the Ashford family mansion wearing a simple white dress, no one applauded.
The wedding was supposed to unite two powerful families.
Instead, everyone in the room looked at Elena as if she were an embarrassing mistake.
She was twenty-six, the daughter of a small family business that had collapsed under a mountain of debt. Her father had spent years building the company, only to lose everything after a disastrous investment.
There was only one person who could save them.
Adrian Ashford.
The thirty-one-year-old heir of Ashford International.
Cold. Reserved. Untouchable.
He had agreed to marry Elena for one reason: their marriage would satisfy an old business agreement between their families and stabilize several important partnerships.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
Elena knew the truth.
Her family would lose their home within weeks if Adrian refused.
So she had accepted the marriage.
At the wedding reception, Adrian’s aunt glanced at Elena’s inexpensive earrings and whispered loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.
“She doesn’t even look like she belongs here.”
Another woman laughed.
“Of course she doesn’t. Adrian could have married anyone. Instead, he chose a girl whose family is practically bankrupt.”
Elena lowered her eyes.
She had expected this.
What she hadn’t expected was Adrian’s grandmother placing her teacup down and saying:
“Remember your position, Elena. Becoming an Ashford doesn’t mean you are an Ashford.”
The room became silent.
Elena slowly raised her eyes.
“I understand.”

Adrian, standing beside her, said nothing.
That night, after the guests left, Elena entered their bedroom carrying a single suitcase.
Adrian was standing beside the window.
“There are a few rules,” he said without turning around.
“No public displays of affection. No interference in my company. Don’t ask questions about my personal life.”
Elena nodded.
“And how long will this marriage last?”
“One year.”
She smiled faintly.
“Then we have nothing to worry about.”
Adrian finally looked at her.
For the first time, he noticed something strange.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t even afraid.
She simply looked tired.
“Why did you agree to this?” he asked.
Elena hesitated.
“Because my family needs me.”
Adrian said nothing.
She placed her suitcase beside the bed.
Neither of them knew that, thousands of miles away, an old man had just received a photograph of Elena.
His hands began to tremble.
“Where did you find this girl?”
The investigator placed a file on the table.
“Her name is Elena Carter.”
The old man stared at the photograph.
For twenty-six years, he had believed his youngest daughter was dead.
But the small crescent-shaped birthmark behind Elena’s left ear was unmistakable.
So was the silver bracelet around her wrist.
A bracelet that had belonged to his missing daughter.
The old man stood abruptly.
“Bring her home.”
The investigator swallowed.
“Sir… there’s a problem.”
“What?”
“She’s already married.”
The old man’s expression hardened.
“To whom?”
“Adrian Ashford.”
Silence filled the room.
Then the old man slowly sat back down.
The Ashfords were wealthy.
Very wealthy.
But compared with the Blackwood family, they were still several steps below the top of the city’s financial world.
And now their heir had unknowingly married the lost daughter of the Blackwoods.
The girl everyone had just humiliated…
was actually the future heiress of an empire worth billions.
But Elena knew nothing.
Not yet.
