THE CHILD HE NEVER KNEW – Part 1 — The Woman at the Door

THE CHILD HE NEVER KNEW
Chapter 1 — The Woman at the Door
For five years, Clara Whitmore had believed that marriage meant surviving the difficult seasons together.
She had stood beside Daniel when his company nearly collapsed. She had sold the jewelry her mother left her to help him cover a debt. She had moved into a smaller apartment when they could no longer afford their old house.
She never asked for anything in return.
Until the night she opened the door and found another woman standing outside.
The woman was young, pale, and visibly pregnant.
“My name is Elise,” she said quietly.
Clara stared at her.
Then Elise placed one trembling hand over her stomach.
“I’m carrying Daniel’s baby.”
For several seconds, Clara heard nothing.
Not the rain against the windows.
Not the traffic outside.
Not even her own heartbeat.
She simply looked at the woman’s stomach and thought of all the nights Daniel had come home late.
All the business trips.
All the passwords he had changed.
All the times he had told Clara she was imagining things.
When Daniel finally came home that evening, Clara was waiting at the dining table.
Elise was gone.
“I know,” Clara said.
Daniel froze.
“What did she tell you?”
“That she’s pregnant.”
His silence was enough.
Clara felt something inside her finally break.
“Is the baby yours?”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
The answer was quiet.
But it destroyed five years of marriage.
Clara removed her wedding ring.
“I want a divorce.”
Daniel looked up sharply.
“Clara, wait.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
She placed the ring on the table.

“You chose her. You chose the child. Now you can live with both.”
Daniel reached for her hand.
But Clara pulled away.
That night, she packed a suitcase and left.
Three days later, her lawyer called.
“There is something you need to know.”
Clara sat silently across from him.
Her lawyer opened an old medical file.
“Before your marriage, you underwent a fertility procedure. According to these records, one embryo was created using genetic material from your husband.”
Clara frowned.
“I never had an embryo implanted.”
“I know.”
Her lawyer turned another page.
“The clinic says the embryo was transferred to another woman five years ago.”
Clara’s blood went cold.
“Another woman?”
He nodded.
“And that woman may be Elise.”
Clara stared at the document.
For the first time, she realized the baby was connected to her too.
But she didn’t yet know how.
