The Ledger of Deception

Chapter 1
“Walking away from Gabriel Costa should have been simple: leave the resignation letter on his desk, empty my apartment, board a flight to London, and disappear before the most feared mafia boss in Chicago realized I was gone. Instead, six hours after I tried to vanish, Gabriel used his money and power to freeze every account I owned, cancel my flight, unlock my apartment—and whisper the one thing I had been terrified to hear: “You’re not leaving.”
For four years, I had managed Gabriel’s chaos.
Officially, I was his executive assistant. In reality, I handled legitimate real-estate fronts, buried financial irregularities, replaced expensive suits ruined during violent disputes, and knew exactly how his voice changed before he ordered someone hurt.
At six that Friday morning, I placed my resignation letter perfectly in the center of his mahogany desk.
Gabriel arrived minutes later, tie loose around his neck, looking exhausted despite celebrating his engagement the night before.
“What is this?”
“My resignation.”
His eyes lifted to mine.
“You don’t resign from me, Clara.”
“My contract expires this month. I’m not renewing it.”
Gabriel gave a quiet, humorless laugh. “You think a contract is what keeps you here?”
That was when the bitterness escaped.
“You’re marrying Isabella Marino in six months. Your families are merging. You need a wife, a clean public image, and a political strategy. You don’t need the woman who cleans up your messes anymore.”
“My marriage to Isabella is business.”
“I know. I drafted the prenup.”
His expression changed.
For three years, Gabriel and I had lived inside stolen hours no one knew existed. Late nights in his office, secret mornings in his penthouse, moments when the terrifying Gabriel Costa became simply Gabriel.
The engagement party finally destroyed the illusion.
I had watched Isabella stand beside him beneath crystal chandeliers at the St. Regis, dressed like she had already conquered his world. Later, Gabriel found me alone near the service corridor and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear.
“You look beautiful,” he murmured.
Then he leaned closer.
“Come to the penthouse tonight. After Isabella leaves.”
Something inside me broke.
“Good night, Mr. Costa. Congratulations on your engagement.”
I went home and packed.
By Friday afternoon, I had a burner phone, three false identities, sixty thousand dollars in cash, and a nine o’clock flight from O’Hare to London.
Then everything collapsed.
My bank accounts were frozen.
My cards were suspended.
My flight was canceled.
Gabriel had dismantled my escape before I even reached the airport.
Cash still worked, so I grabbed my duffel and headed for the door.
A key turned in the lock.
I froze.
Gabriel stepped inside wearing no jacket, his white sleeves rolled above the tattoos circling his wrists. He locked the door behind him and stared at my packed bag.
“Where are you going, Clara?”
“You froze my accounts.”
“You tried to run.”
“I resigned.”
“You booked a flight under a false name.”
My stomach tightened. “How did you know?”
“I know everything.”
He tossed my spare key onto the counter.
“The sixty thousand in the hollowed-out encyclopedia. The burner phone in your coat. Those fake identities.” His voice dropped. “You used security systems I built. Did you actually think you could disappear from me using my own tools?”
“Let me go.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“You have Isabella,” I said. “You have your merger. I gave you four years. We’re even.”
His fingers closed gently beneath my chin.
“Even?”
His thumb moved across my cheekbone.
“You think this is a ledger you can balance before walking away?”
“I don’t belong here anymore.”
His eyes darkened.
“You don’t get to decide where you belong.”
All the anger I had swallowed for years finally exploded.
“I will not stay hidden and clean blood off your hands while you play husband to some mafia princess!”
For several seconds, Gabriel said nothing.
Then he leaned close enough that I could feel his breath against my ear.
“You’re not leaving.”..
Chapter 2: The Contract Bound in Blood
The silence in my apartment stretched thin, heavy with the weight of unspoken truths and four years of suppressed longing. Gabriel’s hand remained resting firmly against my jaw, his thumb tracing the line of my cheek with a gentle intensity that contradicted the ruthless reputation he held across Chicago.
“Why, Gabriel?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper against the quiet hum of the city outside my window. “Why hold on to me when you have everything you ever claimed to want?”
Gabriel didn’t pull away. Instead, he stepped closer, closing the small gap between us until I was forced to look directly into his dark, unyielding eyes.
“Isabella Marino is an arrangement designed by men who think they can control me,” Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. “The merger, the engagement, the public show at the St. Regis—it’s a trap set by her father to take control of my docks.”
I blinked, processing his words. “A trap?”
“Her father thinks he’s cornering me,” Gabriel continued, his fingers sliding up to tangle gently in my hair. “He thinks by forcing this union, he’ll inherit my empire. But he forgot who built this empire from the ground up.”
“And where do I fit into this, Gabriel?” I asked, bitterness lacing my words despite the warmth of his chest against mine. “As your secret assistant? The woman you visit after your fiancé goes home?”
Gabriel’s eyes flashed with a sudden, sharp anger—not directed at me, but at the thought of the last four years being reduced to an afterthought.
“You’re not my secret, Clara,” he said firmly. “You’re my strategist. You’re the only person in this entire godforsaken city who knows every ledger, every secret, and every weakness I possess. I didn’t freeze your accounts to punish you. I froze them because the moment you step onto a plane to London, Marino’s men will know you’re unprotected.”
Chapter 3: The True Strategy
My heart hammered against my ribs as the reality of his words settled in.
“They know about me?”
“They’ve been watching you for three weeks,” Gabriel revealed, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, encrypted drive. “Marino knew your contract was ending. He was waiting for you to leave my protection so he could snatch you off the street and force you to hand over my financial codes.”
I stared at the drive, the blood running cold in my veins. The illusion of my quiet, clean escape to London shattered into pieces. I had thought I was escaping Gabriel’s world, but I had actually been walking straight into a trap.
“So what happens now?” I asked, looking up at him.
Gabriel leaned down until his lips brushed against my forehead, a soft, possessive gesture that made my breath hitch.
“Now, we finish the play,” Gabriel murmured. “The engagement party was the bait. Tomorrow morning, Marino’s accountants are going to attempt a quiet takeover of my real-estate holding firm—the very firm whose security protocols you wrote.”
A slow understanding spread through me. “The backdoors I built into the system.”
“Precisely,” Gabriel said, a dark, dangerous smile finally breaking across his face. “They think they’re robbing me. Instead, they’re going to walk right into a trap that transfers every single asset Marino owns directly into a shell corporation registered in your name.”
Chapter 4: The Final Ledger
Seventy-two hours later, the dust in Chicago’s underworld settled with absolute, terrifying speed.
Marino’s attempt to seize Gabriel’s financial empire backfired spectacularly. By noon on Monday, federal agents and internal auditors seized Marino’s offices, citing massive financial discrepancies—all meticulously documented and handed over by an anonymous source.
The engagement between Gabriel Costa and Isabella Marino was officially dissolved before the ink on the morning papers even dried.
In the quiet sanctuary of Gabriel’s penthouse office overlooking the skyline, I stood before the floor-to-ceiling glass, holding a hot cup of coffee. The city below was calm, unaware of the quiet war that had just been fought and won in the shadows.
A pair of strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a warm, broad chest. Gabriel rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.
“Your flight to London was rescheduled for nine tonight,” Gabriel murmured softly against my neck. “Your accounts are unfrozen, your fake identities are cleared, and the sixty thousand in cash is back in your bag.”
I turned slightly in his embrace, looking up into his dark eyes. “Are you letting me go?”
Gabriel reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment, laying it on the glass desk beside us.
It wasn’t a resignation acceptance. It was a new contract—a full partnership deed transferring fifty percent of Costa Enterprises directly into my name, alongside a simple, elegant diamond ring resting in a black velvet box.
“You said you wouldn’t clean up my blood money while I play husband to someone else,” Gabriel said softly, his hands resting on my hips. “So don’t. Run the empire with me, Clara. As my equal. As my wife.”
I looked at the contract, then up at the man who had frozen my world just to keep me safe. For four years, I had thought I was just an assistant holding a ledger. But standing beside Gabriel Costa, I realized I was the only person who had ever held his heart.
I smiled, leaning up to kiss him. “I guess I’m staying.”
