Three Scientists Win the 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine for Unlocking the Brain With Light

Three scientists have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries that transformed the way researchers can study the living brain.

Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel were announced as this year’s laureates on October 5 by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.

The scientists were honored “for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics,” a field that allows researchers to use light to control the activity of individual nerve cells.

The breakthrough began with fundamental discoveries about proteins that respond to light. Hegemann and Nagel helped establish the scientific basis for light-sensitive ion channels, while Deisseroth played a major role in developing optogenetics into a powerful method for controlling and studying neural activity.

Optogenetics works by introducing light-sensitive proteins into specific nerve cells. Researchers can then use precisely timed flashes of light to switch the activity of those cells on or off.

This gives scientists an unusually precise way to investigate how different groups of neurons influence behavior, movement and other functions of the brain.

According to the Nobel committee, the technique is now used in laboratories around the world to investigate the mysteries of the brain. It has also opened possibilities for developing new approaches to neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Deisseroth, a professor at Stanford University, has helped make optogenetics a widely used research technique. Hegemann is a professor at Humboldt University of Berlin, while Nagel is affiliated with Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg in Germany.

The three laureates will share a prize of 12 million Swedish kronor, worth roughly $1.2 million.

The medicine award marks the beginning of Nobel Prize week. Prizes in physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economic sciences will be announced over the following days.

Their work demonstrates how discoveries made at the most basic level of biology can eventually provide scientists with entirely new ways to understand one of the most complex organs in the human body.
