A 200-Year-Old Tradition Brings Generations Together in Ghana

For 200 years, the people of Akuapem in eastern Ghana have kept alive the memory of a historic victory through one of their most important cultural celebrations.

This week, communities gathered for the Odwira Festival, marking the bicentennial anniversary of the Akuapem people’s victory over the Ashanti Empire in 1826. The celebration brought together chiefs, families, young people and community members in a colorful display of history and tradition.

One of the most striking parts of the celebration was a reenactment of the historic battle. Young men dressed as warriors marched through forests and over steep mountain paths, following a route connected with the events of two centuries ago.

The reenactment was not simply a performance. It gave younger generations an opportunity to learn about the history of their community directly from elders and cultural leaders.

Nanahemaa Adwoa Awindor, the Queen Mother responsible for developmental activities, said the 200-year anniversary represented more than the passing of time. She described it as a testament to the resilience of the people and the ability of culture to connect generations.

For 36-year-old Akuapem resident Kingsley Ketegu, taking part in the celebration was also a way for young people to reconnect with traditions that can sometimes be overlooked.

The celebrations included traditional dancing, royal ceremonies, community gatherings and the participation of children and young adults. Across the events, the emphasis remained on remembering the past while keeping the culture meaningful for future generations.

Two centuries after the original battle, the Odwira Festival continues to give the Akuapem community a reason to come together — showing how stories passed down through generations can remain an important part of everyday life.
