A Doctor Who Survived a Heart Transplant Celebrates a New Beginning

A British doctor has begun a new chapter in her life after becoming a mother nearly four years after undergoing an emergency heart transplant.

Dr. Sanjana Kochhar, a general practitioner from Liverpool, was critically ill in 2022 when she developed multiple organ failure and was placed on the urgent heart transplant waiting list.

A Life-Threatening Turn

Kochhar had experienced heart problems for years, including breathlessness and palpitations. Her condition became significantly worse in 2022, leaving her in need of a transplant.

She eventually received a donor heart and began a long period of recovery. She was discharged from hospital on Christmas Eve that year.

Returning to Everyday Life

Following the transplant, Kochhar gradually returned to her career and continued rebuilding her life.

She also developed a relationship with members of her donor’s family, something she described as an important part of understanding the gift that had allowed her to survive.

A New Family Member

In August 2026, Kochhar and her husband welcomed their first child, a baby girl.

The birth came almost four years after her transplant and marked a major milestone in her recovery and family life.

A Special Reminder in Liverpool

The British Heart Foundation has also dedicated a living memorial bench to Kochhar in Liverpool’s Otterspool Park.

The bench serves as a reminder of her journey and of the donor whose heart gave her another chance at life.

Sharing Her Experience

Kochhar has spoken about the emotional complexity of receiving an organ transplant and the importance of remembering the person behind the donation.

She has also encouraged people to discuss organ donation with their families and to pay attention to signs of heart problems.

A Journey Into a New Chapter

From facing a life-threatening medical crisis to becoming a mother, Kochhar’s story has unfolded over several years.

Her experience now includes a successful transplant, a return to her profession and the arrival of her first child.
