After 13 Years, a Beloved Outback Festival Is Preparing for One Last Celebration

After 13 years of music, long road trips and unforgettable gatherings in the Australian outback, the Big Red Bash is preparing for its final celebration.

Organisers have announced that the 2027 event at Birdsville, Queensland, will be the festival’s last. The decision comes after years of difficult weather, rising costs and the enormous logistical challenge of staging a major festival in one of Australia’s most remote locations.

A Festival Built in the Desert

The Big Red Bash began in 2013 as a family-driven project and quickly became one of Australia’s best-known outback festivals.

Thousands of people travelled to the edge of the Simpson Desert each year, bringing caravans and camping equipment to spend several days surrounded by red sand dunes and live music.

Previous festivals attracted between 8,000 and 12,000 people, providing an important boost to Birdsville and surrounding communities.

A Difficult Year Forced a Change

The 2026 festival was cancelled after heavy rainfall flooded the site around the Big Red sand dune.

Months later, parts of the festival grounds remain underwater. Organisers nevertheless believe the water will disappear before the final event, using local knowledge and evaporation data to estimate that the site will be ready by July 2027.

More Than a Music Festival

For Birdsville businesses, the event has become an important part of the local economy. Visitors who travel to the festival also stop in nearby towns, stay in local accommodation and spend money with small businesses.

Local business owner Jenna Brook said losing the festival would be a major blow because it brings visitors who might otherwise never travel to the remote region.

The festival also has deeply personal roots for founder Greg Donovan. It was originally created as a fundraising effort after his son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

One Final Party in the Outback

The final Big Red Bash is scheduled for July 2027 and will feature performers including Missy Higgins, Hoodoo Gurus, Jessica Mauboy, Leo Sayer, The Living End and Birds of Tokyo.

For the Donovan family, the final event will be an opportunity to celebrate what they built rather than simply close the chapter.

After more than a decade of turning an isolated stretch of red desert into a gathering place for thousands of people, the Big Red Bash will say goodbye with one last celebration under the outback sky.
