Arizona Driver Rescued by Helicopter as Floodwaters Swallow His Truck

TONOPAH, Arizona — September 29, 2026 — A man was rescued by helicopter after his pickup truck was swept away and overturned in rapidly rising floodwaters near Tonopah, Arizona, leaving him stranded on top of the vehicle.

A Race Against Rising Water

The rescue took place near 327th Avenue after heavy rainfall caused flooding across parts of the Phoenix-area region. Responding deputies found the driver sitting on the overturned truck while muddy water continued moving around the vehicle.

The water was initially below the truck’s windows but rose rapidly during the rescue. The vehicle was about 30 feet from the shoreline, making it too dangerous for rescuers to reach the man directly.

Rescue Specialist Lowered From Helicopter

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office aviation team decided that a hoist rescue was the safest option. Deputy Lindsey Smith was lowered approximately 80 feet from a helicopter toward the stranded driver.

After initially struggling to reach the vehicle, Smith secured herself and reached the man. The two were then lifted from the truck and taken to safety on the riverbank.

Pilot Rich Dickner told local media that the rapidly rising water created an urgent situation. The entire helicopter rescue was completed in less than five minutes.

Officials Warn About Flash Floods

The rescue happened during a period of dangerous flooding across parts of the U.S. Southwest. Local emergency officials have repeatedly warned that normally dry washes and low-lying roads can become dangerous within minutes during heavy rain.

Authorities continue to advise motorists never to drive through flooded roads, even when the route is familiar. Fast-moving water can quickly change conditions and sweep vehicles away.

A Dramatic Rescue Caught on Video

Video released by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office showed the man sitting on his overturned truck while floodwater surrounded the vehicle. The footage also captured the rescue specialist being lowered from the helicopter before the pair were lifted to safety.

The incident highlighted the speed at which flash-flood conditions can deteriorate and the role specialized aviation crews can play when ground access becomes too dangerous.
