Baby Born With a Giant Birthmark Covering Her Back Faces Cancer Diagnosis Before Her First Birthday
When little Macey-Mai Clarke was born in Plymouth, England, in May 2025, her mother, Katelyn Clarke, immediately noticed something unusual about her daughter’s skin.
A large, dark birthmark covered almost her entire back, while numerous smaller marks appeared across other parts of her tiny body.
What initially appeared to be an unusual congenital skin condition would eventually lead to a devastating medical discovery.
Born With More Than 100 Birthmarks
Macey-Mai was diagnosed with giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN), a rare condition involving unusually large collections of pigment-producing cells in the skin.
Her largest birthmark extended across her back, while more than 100 smaller marks appeared across her body, including her face and scalp.
Although congenital melanocytic nevi are not necessarily cancerous, larger forms can carry an increased risk of melanoma and other complications.
When Her Birthmark Began to Change
As Macey-Mai grew, her family noticed concerning changes in her skin.
Several lesions developed within the largest birthmark. Some became painful, enlarged rapidly and began bleeding.
At just three months old, Macey-Mai underwent surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where specialists removed seven suspicious lesions for further examination.
Her mother was instructed to monitor the remaining birthmarks carefully, documenting changes through regular photographs.
A Devastating Diagnosis Before Her First Birthday
In March 2026, Macey-Mai’s family received heartbreaking news: medical examinations had confirmed malignancy in one of the lesions.
The discovery raised serious concerns about the possibility of further disease progression.
For Katelyn, the diagnosis was especially devastating because she had understood cancer to be a potential risk associated with her daughter’s condition later in life.
Instead, her little girl was facing the disease before celebrating her first birthday.
A Family Living With Uncertainty
Macey-Mai requires continued specialist monitoring, with doctors assessing her skin for new growths, bleeding and other concerning changes.
Her condition can also cause significant irritation, making ordinary clothing uncomfortable. Her family uses specially adapted sleepsuits to help protect her delicate skin.
Repeated journeys to London for medical appointments have added emotional and financial pressure to the household.
Her parents, Katelyn Clarke and Dainen Milne, have been fundraising to support medical travel and their family’s ongoing needs.
Making Every Precious Moment Count
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Macey-Mai’s medical future, her parents remain determined to give her a childhood filled with love and meaningful experiences.
As her first birthday approached, the family focused on creating precious memories while continuing to seek specialist treatment.
Her story highlights the importance of medical monitoring for children with complex congenital skin conditions and the extraordinary challenges families can face when a rare diagnosis becomes life-threatening.
For Macey-Mai’s parents, every milestone is a moment worth celebrating.
