BABY BORN WITH A LARGE PURPLE BIRTHMARK COVERING HIS FACE IS DIAGNOSED WITH TWO RARE SYNDROMES

When Madeline welcomed her first son, Logan, in 2017, she noticed a striking red and purple birthmark covering almost a quarter of his face.

There were also unusual marks on his legs and feet.

At first, his parents hoped the discoloration was simply part of his newborn appearance. Initial examinations at the hospital suggested that Logan was otherwise healthy.

But his mother couldn’t shake the feeling that there might be something more behind the visible marks.

A Birthmark That Raised Important Questions

Within days of bringing Logan home, his parents arranged an appointment with a pediatrician.

After examining the unusual facial birthmark, the doctor referred him to the dermatology specialists at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

The medical team suspected that the marks could be associated with an underlying vascular condition.

Further examinations were needed to understand whether the differences extended beyond Logan’s skin.

An MRI at Just 20 Days Old

When Logan was only 20 days old, doctors performed an MRI.

The imaging revealed a vascular malformation involving his brain.

He was diagnosed with Sturge-Weber syndrome, a rare neurological condition associated with abnormal blood vessels that can affect the skin, brain and eyes.

The diagnosis meant that his doctors would need to monitor him for complications such as seizures and glaucoma.

For his parents, the news was frightening. What had first appeared to be an unusual birthmark was connected to a much more complex medical condition.

A Second Rare Syndrome

Logan’s medical evaluations also revealed another diagnosis: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome.

This congenital condition is associated with abnormal blood vessel development and may involve unusual growth of bones and soft tissues.

The additional birthmarks on Logan’s legs were an important clue.

His care would therefore require specialists from several medical fields, rather than treatment focused only on his facial appearance.

Another Frightening Moment Before His First Birthday

For several months, Logan’s family continued working with his medical team and monitoring his development.

Then, shortly before his first birthday, he experienced his first seizure.

The event brought the neurological risks associated with his diagnosis into sharp focus.

His family continued seeking coordinated care to address the different challenges associated with his rare conditions.

More Than a Visible Difference

Logan’s journey demonstrates why some extensive birthmarks require careful medical evaluation.

Not every birthmark indicates an underlying disorder. However, certain vascular patterns, particularly those involving the face, may prompt specialists to investigate associated neurological or eye conditions.

For Madeline and her family, recognizing the significance of Logan’s unusual skin markings helped them begin the process of understanding his medical needs.

His story is a reminder that behind a visible congenital difference, there may be challenges that cannot be seen in a photograph.
