Baby Born With Most of His Brain Missing Defies Doctors’ Expectations and Lives for Five Remarkable Years

When Brittany and Brandon Buell welcomed their son Jaxon on August 27, 2014, in Florida, doctors feared their little boy might survive only a few days.

Jaxon had been born with an extremely rare brain malformation that prevented much of his brain and skull from developing normally.

His unusually shaped head made his condition immediately visible. But his parents were determined to make every moment of his life meaningful.

A Devastating Discovery During Pregnancy

At approximately 17 weeks pregnant, Brittany learned that something was seriously wrong with her unborn baby’s development.

Further medical examinations revealed a severe neurological abnormality.

Jaxon was eventually diagnosed with microhydranencephaly, a rare condition involving extreme underdevelopment of the brain and skull.

His brain was approximately one-fifth the expected size, and doctors warned his parents that his chances of long-term survival were extremely poor.

A Baby Who Surprised His Doctors

Despite the devastating prognosis, Jaxon survived his first days, weeks and months.

His parents began sharing photographs and updates about their son under the name Jaxon Strong.

Although Jaxon experienced profound developmental limitations and required specialized medical care, his family celebrated every achievement.

His smiles, eye contact and responses to familiar voices became precious moments for his parents.

The Little Boy Who Captured Hearts Worldwide

By August 2015, Jaxon had celebrated his first birthday, a milestone his family had once feared he would never reach.

His photographs spread across social media, attracting hundreds of thousands of supporters.

In December 2015, Jaxon experienced another memorable childhood moment when he met Santa Claus for the first time.

The photograph became a widely shared symbol of his family’s journey.

Five Years of Precious Memories

As Jaxon grew older, his parents continued documenting his development while managing his complex medical needs.

He could not walk or communicate like most children his age, but his family found joy in the ways he interacted with them.

His story also helped raise awareness about rare neurological conditions and the experiences of families caring for children with profound disabilities.

A Heartbreaking Goodbye

In March 2020, Jaxon’s health began deteriorating as his organs gradually stopped functioning.

He entered hospice care, where his family focused on keeping him comfortable.

On April 1, 2020, Jaxon peacefully passed away at five years old, surrounded by his loved ones.

His father, Brandon, confirmed that Jaxon’s death was unrelated to COVID-19.

Although his life was far shorter than his parents had hoped, Jaxon had survived years beyond his initial prognosis.

For his family and the thousands of people who followed his journey, he will always be remembered as Jaxon Strong.
