Baby Born With Rare Condition That Changed His Face and Left Him Blind in One Eye Survives a Difficult Beginning

When Maddicyn Brokenshire first imagined holding her baby boy, she never expected that their journey together would involve so many frightening medical challenges.

Her son, Ollyver, was born in 2025 with amniotic band syndrome, a rare condition that affected the development of his face and eyes while he was still in the womb.

The condition left visible differences across his face and caused him to lose vision in one eye.

But beyond his complicated medical journey, his mother wanted the world to see something else: a happy little boy who loved being around people.

A Pregnancy Filled With Fear and Uncertainty

Before becoming pregnant with Ollyver, Maddicyn had already experienced two miscarriages.

Her subsequent pregnancy brought further complications, including a subchorionic hemorrhage and preeclampsia.

Doctors also discovered that her unborn baby had amniotic band syndrome, a condition in which fibrous bands can interfere with fetal development.

The family faced difficult medical decisions and considerable uncertainty about whether their baby would survive.

Despite the frightening circumstances, Maddicyn and her husband, Daniel, continued preparing for their son’s arrival.

Eleven Minutes That Changed Everything

Following complications associated with preeclampsia, Maddicyn was admitted to hospital and told that her baby would need to be delivered within 72 hours.

Ollyver’s arrival was anything but straightforward.

According to his mother, the newborn required 11 minutes of resuscitation immediately after birth.

It was an extraordinarily frightening beginning for a family that had already endured months of uncertainty.

But Ollyver survived, beginning a medical journey that would involve repeated procedures and specialized care.

Multiple Surgeries and the Fight to Protect His Vision

Ollyver’s condition affected the structure of his face and the development of his eyes.

During his time in neonatal intensive care, doctors performed surgery to release an amniotic band affecting one of his eyes.

He subsequently underwent additional procedures, including forehead flap skin removal and facial Z-plasty.

His mother explained that doctors initially feared he might have lost vision in both eyes.

However, after the band affecting one eye was released, Ollyver began visually tracking objects.

By the time his family shared their story with PEOPLE in May 2026, his stronger eye appeared to have functional vision, while his other eye remained blind.

Further reconstructive and eye procedures were being planned as part of his continuing treatment.

A Mother Afraid of How the World Would Treat Her Son

Alongside the medical challenges, Maddicyn faced another painful experience: cruel comments directed at her baby’s appearance online.

Some strangers made deeply hurtful assumptions about Ollyver’s quality of life.

The criticism initially left his mother afraid to take him into public spaces, worried that people would stare or judge him.

But something unexpected happened when she began going out with her son.

Instead of the rejection she had feared, she encountered kindness, curiosity and encouragement.

Other mothers welcomed her, while staff at a local beauty salon called Pamper Perfection helped her regain the confidence to share her son’s journey openly.

The Happy Little Boy Behind the Medical Diagnosis

In the family’s May 2026 update, Ollyver was eight months old and continuing to receive medical care.

Despite everything he had experienced, his mother described him as a cheerful, sociable baby who brought happiness to those around him.

She and Daniel decided to share his story publicly so other parents raising children with rare medical conditions would feel less isolated.

Ollyver’s future will involve further treatment, but his family continues celebrating his progress and the everyday moments that make childhood special.

For Maddicyn, the greatest transformation was not simply medical. It was learning that she did not have to hide her son from the world.

He deserved to be seen, welcomed and loved exactly as he was.
