Baby Boy Born With a Tumor Bigger Than His Head Defies the Odds After a Life-Saving Operation

Baby Boy Born With a Tumor Bigger Than His Head Defies the Odds After a Life-Saving Operation
Before little Owen Lower took his first breath, doctors were already preparing for a delivery unlike almost any other.
The baby boy had developed an enormous tumor on his neck while still inside his mother’s womb. The mass was larger than his head, threatening to obstruct the airway he would need to survive after birth.
For his parents, Katy Preidt and Dustin Lower, what should have been a joyful pregnancy became a frightening journey filled with uncertainty.
A Devastating Discovery Before Birth
During pregnancy, Owen was diagnosed with a giant cervical teratoma, an extremely rare tumor that develops in the neck.
Although these tumors are often benign, their size and location can create life-threatening complications, particularly when they compress a developing baby’s airway.
In Owen’s case, the growth was so large that doctors knew an ordinary delivery could put his life at immediate risk.
His parents faced the terrifying possibility that their son might not survive his own birth.
A Delivery Where Every Second Mattered
Specialists at Riley Children’s Health assembled a multidisciplinary team to prepare for Owen’s arrival.
They planned a highly coordinated delivery using a procedure that would allow doctors to secure his airway while he was still receiving oxygen through the placenta.
During the cesarean section, surgeons partially delivered Owen while maintaining the connection to his mother. Medical specialists then intubated him before the umbilical cord was cut.
This critical intervention gave the newborn a chance to breathe despite the enormous mass surrounding his neck.

Removing the Massive Tumor
Surviving delivery was only the beginning of Owen’s medical journey.
His care team also had to address the giant tumor, which had developed in one of the most delicate areas of his body.
Removing such a mass requires careful surgical planning because important blood vessels, nerves and structures involved in breathing are located within the neck.
Owen underwent treatment at Riley Children’s Health, where specialists successfully removed the enormous growth.
His recovery required continued medical support and close monitoring as his family adjusted to caring for a child who had already endured so much.
A Mother’s Gratitude After Fearing the Worst
In February 2025, Riley Children’s Health shared an update on Owen’s remarkable progress.
At 15 months old, the little boy was living at home in Noblesville, Indiana, with his parents and older sister, Lyla.
Although he continued to have medical needs and had recently experienced respiratory illnesses requiring hospitalization, Owen was growing and enjoying life with his family.
His mother reflected on the overwhelming fear she experienced when she thought she might lose him.
For a family that once faced the possibility of saying goodbye before their son could even take his first breath, watching Owen grow into a lively toddler was an extraordinary milestone.
His story is a reminder of how specialized neonatal care, surgical expertise and a family’s determination can change the outcome of even the most frightening medical beginnings.
