BORN WITHOUT A NOSE, LITTLE TESSA FACED YEARS OF SURGERY — BUT HER FAMILY WANTED THE WORLD TO SEE HER BEAUTIFUL SMILE

When Grainne and Nathan Evans welcomed their daughter Tessa in Ireland in 2013, they discovered that their little girl had been born with an exceptionally rare condition.

Tessa had no external nose.

Doctors diagnosed her with complete congenital arhinia, a developmental condition in which the nose fails to form before birth.

For her parents, the diagnosis marked the beginning of a long medical journey involving specialist care, complex surgery and difficult decisions about their daughter’s future.

A Baby Girl Born With an Extremely Rare Condition

Tessa’s condition affected more than her appearance. Without normal nasal structures, she faced significant challenges involving breathing and her sense of smell.

She required a tracheostomy to help her breathe safely.

Her parents also had to learn how to manage her medical needs while caring for her as a newborn.

Despite the challenges, they wanted their daughter to experience the affection, attention and everyday childhood moments that every little girl deserves.

A Childhood Filled With Medical Challenges

As Tessa grew, her family explored reconstructive treatment options with specialist surgeons.

Creating a nose for a child born without one involves far more than a conventional cosmetic procedure.

Doctors must consider facial development, the position of surrounding structures and the child’s future growth.

For Tessa, treatment would involve a carefully planned series of operations rather than a single procedure.

Doctors Begin Reconstructing Her Nose

Tessa underwent pioneering reconstructive treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Surgeons used a custom-designed implant to begin creating the underlying structure of a nose.

The process was intended to support further reconstruction as she grew older.

Her medical journey attracted international attention because of the rarity of her condition and the innovative approach used by her surgical team.

Her Parents Wanted People to See the Little Girl Behind the Diagnosis

For Grainne and Nathan, Tessa’s appearance was only one small part of who she was.

They described their daughter as a happy child with a lively personality.

Her family shared photographs and updates to help others understand her condition and to show that a visible facial difference should not define a person’s worth.

They hoped that sharing Tessa’s journey would encourage greater understanding of children born with rare craniofacial conditions.

More Than a Medical Miracle

Tessa’s story became known internationally through photographs showing her as a newborn and during her early childhood.

Behind the headlines was a family navigating the realities of raising a child with complex medical needs.

Her parents faced appointments, operations and uncertainty, but also celebrated the ordinary moments that made their daughter unique.

Tessa’s story is a reminder that children with visible differences are more than their diagnoses. Their lives are made up of relationships, personalities and milestones that deserve to be seen and celebrated.
