Boy Who Battled Leukemia for Over Two Years Celebrates One Year Cancer-Free

An 11-year-old boy from Sacramento, California, is celebrating an extraordinary milestone after spending more than two years undergoing treatment for leukemia.

Marcel Bendorf, whose childhood was interrupted by a devastating cancer diagnosis at just seven years old, has now reached one year cancer-free.

His remarkable journey is receiving renewed attention as he prepares to be recognized as the 2026 Honored Hero at Sacramento’s Light the Night event.

An Ordinary Trip to the Movies Changes Everything

Marcel’s medical journey began unexpectedly when he was seven years old.

While on his way to the movies, he suddenly experienced intense pain in his lower back and legs. The pain became so severe that he could neither sit upright nor stand.

His family sought emergency medical assistance, beginning several days of testing that would ultimately reveal devastating news.

Doctors diagnosed Marcel with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a form of blood cancer that affects developing white blood cells.

More Than Two Years of Fighting Cancer

Following his diagnosis, Marcel began an extensive treatment journey that lasted two years, two months and 23 days.

During that time, he and his family navigated the physical and emotional challenges associated with childhood cancer treatment.

His experience became a defining chapter of his young life, replacing ordinary childhood routines with medical appointments, treatment and uncertainty.

A Milestone His Family Waited Years to Celebrate

Now 11 years old, Marcel has reached a milestone his family once desperately hoped for: one full year without cancer.

His recovery is being celebrated beyond his immediate family as his story reaches the wider Sacramento community.

Marcel and his father, Christopher Bendorf, appeared on KCRA 3 to share his journey and discuss the upcoming recognition.

From Childhood Cancer Patient to Honored Hero

Marcel has been selected as the 2026 Honored Hero for Sacramento’s Light the Night event, organized by Blood Cancer United.

The event, scheduled for October 24 at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, brings together cancer survivors, families and supporters while remembering those who have lost their lives to blood cancer.

For Marcel, the recognition represents an important new chapter following years of difficult treatment.

His story is also bringing attention to the experiences of children living with leukemia and the families who support them throughout their medical journeys.

After more than two years of treatment, Marcel now has something extraordinary to celebrate: a full year cancer-free and a community preparing to honor his journey.
