Christa Pike Remains Handcuffed to Hospital Bed as Attorneys Challenge Her Treatment
A New Dispute Emerges After the Failed Execution
Christa Pike remains handcuffed and shackled to a hospital bed following the failed attempt to execute her in Tennessee, according to her attorney. During a court hearing on October 7, Pike’s legal team raised concerns that state correctional officers were keeping her restrained despite objections from medical staff.
The dispute came as Pike continues to recover from serious injuries suffered during the September 30 lethal injection attempt. Her lawyers say the condition of her arms makes the restraints particularly concerning.
Medical Staff Allegedly Asked for the Restraints to Be Removed
Attorney Luke Ihnen told the court that medical personnel had requested that the restraints be removed because of Pike’s injuries. According to her legal team, those requests were not accepted by Tennessee correctional officials.
The judge did not immediately order the restraints to be removed. Instead, Chancellor I’Ashea L. Myles requested an affidavit from the hospital or Pike’s medical team confirming that the shackling conflicts with medical advice before deciding whether further action should be taken.

Pike Survived Two Lethal Doses
Pike, 50, was scheduled to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than two centuries. On September 30, she received two doses of pentobarbital, but the execution did not produce the intended result.
Her attorneys said the lethal injection caused severe injuries to her arms after problems with intravenous access. Pike was taken to a hospital and initially remained in critical condition.
She Later Regained Consciousness
In a development that surprised her legal team, Pike later regained consciousness and began speaking. Her attorneys had previously been told that she was considered brain dead and might be taken off life support.
She remains seriously ill and faces a long recovery. Reports from her attorneys and medical advisers have described her recovery as medically unprecedented, although her long-term prognosis remains uncertain.

Judge Orders Evidence From the Failed Execution Preserved
The October 7 hearing also focused on preserving evidence from the failed execution. The court ordered Tennessee officials to retain relevant physical evidence, surveillance footage, communications and materials connected to the procedure.
Pike’s attorneys are seeking to preserve the evidence as they challenge what happened during the execution attempt and consider the legal consequences. The state has also launched an investigation into the incident.
