Cold Case Mystery Solved After 43 Years as Police Identify the “Unknown Wanderer”

A decades-old mystery in the United States has been solved after investigators identified a man whose body was discovered in an Idaho church more than 43 years ago.

The man, previously known only as the “Unknown Wanderer,” was identified as Dr. Mathew Francis Betkouski, authorities announced on September 23, 2026.

His body was discovered in a church in Boise, Idaho, in December 1982. For more than four decades, investigators were unable to determine who he was, leaving the case unresolved and his family unaware of what had happened to him.

The investigation was reopened in 2019 by Ada County Sheriff’s Office Detective Tim Cooper. Investigators revisited evidence from the original case and eventually found a potentially important clue among the man’s belongings: a key bearing a marking connected to a hardware store in Jacksonville, Florida.

That clue helped investigators reconstruct parts of Betkouski’s past and eventually establish his identity.

Betkouski’s story had previously attracted attention because his case was featured on the television program “Unsolved Mysteries” in the 1990s. For years afterward, investigators and members of the public continued trying to determine who the unidentified man was.

The identification finally gives his name back to a person who had remained unidentified for most of his family’s lifetime.

Authorities have described the development as a major breakthrough in a case that had remained open for more than four decades. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is separate from the identification process and remains an important part of understanding what happened to him.

For investigators, the case demonstrates how evidence preserved for decades can sometimes provide answers long after an investigation initially appears to have reached a dead end.
