Congratulations, Daniel Part 3: Congratulations, Daniel

Congratulations, Daniel
Part 3: Congratulations, Daniel
Three days later, Daniel found me at the small apartment I had rented near my old architectural studio.
He arrived with two bodyguards, wearing a charcoal suit and the same expensive watch I had left behind in the penthouse.
When I opened the door, his eyes swept over the modest living room.
“You’re living here?”
“Yes. It’s called having a home that doesn’t come with emotional blackmail.”
His jaw tightened.
“Enough, Claire. We need to discuss the documents.”
“Which documents? The ones you planned to make me sign, or the ones proving my father never intended to give you his properties?”
For the first time, Daniel had no immediate answer.
I stepped aside and let him enter.
He dismissed his bodyguards with a gesture, then turned toward me.
“Your father and I had a business agreement.”
“My father also made you promise to protect me.”
“I have protected you.”
“By cheating on me? By treating our marriage like a transaction?”
His expression hardened.
“Olivia has nothing to do with this.”
“Then why did you pay for a paternity test?”
Silence filled the apartment.
I watched his face carefully.
“Who told you that?”
“Does it matter?”
Daniel dragged a hand over his face.
“The test hasn’t confirmed anything yet.”
My heart gave a painful twist, but I refused to let him see it.

“So even you don’t know whether the child is yours.”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to.”
He moved closer.
“Claire, whatever happened with Olivia, I never intended to destroy our marriage.”
I laughed quietly.
“You intended to use my name, my inheritance, and my trust. You simply didn’t expect me to leave before you got everything you wanted.”
His eyes darkened.
“Come home. We’ll settle this privately. I’ll give you whatever you want.”
“I want the truth.”
“You wouldn’t understand the kind of pressure I’m under.”
“Then explain it to me.”
He looked away.
That was when I realized something astonishing.
Daniel Blackwood could negotiate with dangerous men, intimidate powerful businessmen, and command an entire criminal empire.
But he couldn’t stand in front of his wife and tell her the truth.
My phone rang.
It was my lawyer.
I answered on speaker.
“Claire, the preliminary review is complete,” she said. “Your father’s property transfer was never finalized. You remain the legal owner, and we found evidence that someone attempted to submit an altered authorization last week.”
I looked directly at Daniel.
His expression changed.
My lawyer continued, “We’ve preserved the relevant records. We’ll be filing a formal complaint and requesting an investigation.”
“Thank you,” I replied before ending the call.
Daniel’s voice dropped dangerously low.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
“No, Daniel. For the first time, I know exactly what I’m doing.”
He stared at me, and for a moment, I saw something beneath his anger.
Fear.
Then his phone rang.
He answered sharply.
“What?”
A voice came through the speaker, frantic enough for me to hear.
“Boss, Olivia’s gone. She took the original files from your office.”
Daniel went completely still.
The caller continued.
“And Marcus Vale just announced that he’s holding a press conference. He claims he has proof that Blackwood Logistics obtained property through fraudulent agreements.”
Daniel slowly lowered his phone.
Everything was collapsing at once.
I walked toward the door and opened it.
“Congratulations, Daniel.”
He looked at me in disbelief.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you’re finally getting the life you chose.”
“Claire, don’t do this.”
I met his eyes for the last time.
“You made your choices. I made mine. Don’t confuse the consequences with my revenge.”
He stood motionless as I gestured toward the hallway.
For three years, I had waited for him to choose me over his ambition, his secrets, and his need for control.
Now I understood that I had never needed to win that competition.
I only needed to walk away from it.
Daniel left without another word.
That evening, I returned to my architectural studio and began planning its reopening. The space needed repairs, new equipment, and plenty of work, but for the first time in years, every decision belonged to me.
Then my lawyer called again.
“Claire, there’s one more thing. The original agreement contains a handwritten note from your father. It was hidden in the final pages.”
“What does it say?”
She paused.
“Your father wrote that Daniel wasn’t the first man who tried to acquire those properties. He believed someone in his own family had been working with Marcus Vale for years.”
My smile faded.
“Who?”
“We’re still investigating. But there’s a name mentioned in the note.”
I gripped the phone.
“Tell me.”
“Daniel’s mother, Eleanor Blackwood.”
I stood frozen in the middle of my studio.
Daniel had betrayed me. Olivia had manipulated him. Marcus Vale was threatening his empire.
But if Eleanor had been involved from the beginning, then my marriage might have been part of a much larger scheme.
And the next person I needed to confront wasn’t my husband.
It was his mother.
