DOCTORS FEARED SHE HAD ONLY AN HOUR TO LIVE — BUT THIS 245-GRAM BABY FOUGHT HER WAY HOME
When a tiny baby girl was born at a San Diego hospital in December 2018, she weighed just 245 grams — approximately the same as a large apple.
She was so small that she could fit in the palm of an adult’s hand.
Doctors warned her parents that she might survive for only an hour. But the little girl, known publicly as Saybie, would go on to spend five months fighting for her life in neonatal intensive care.
In May 2019, the hospital announced that she had finally gone home.
An Emergency Delivery at Just 23 Weeks
Saybie’s mother was only 23 weeks and three days pregnant when she developed severe preeclampsia, a potentially life-threatening pregnancy complication.
Her medical team determined that an emergency Caesarean section was necessary.
Saybie entered the world months before her expected due date, weighing just 8.6 ounces.
At such an early gestational age, her organs were extremely immature, placing her at serious risk of life-threatening complications.
Her parents were told to prepare for the possibility that they might have very little time with their daughter.
The Smallest Patient in the Hospital
Saybie was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns in San Diego.
There, a specialist team worked around the clock to support her breathing, nutrition and development.
Her extraordinary size made even routine aspects of newborn care exceptionally delicate.
But as the days passed, Saybie continued to survive.
The hour her parents had feared might be their last with her became a day. Then another. Eventually, those days turned into weeks.

Five Months of Waiting and Hoping
Throughout her hospital stay, Saybie gradually gained weight and developed the strength she needed to survive outside intensive care.
Her medical team monitored her progress closely, while her family waited for the moment they could finally take her home.
Unlike many babies born extremely prematurely, Saybie reportedly avoided several of the most serious complications associated with such early births.
Nevertheless, her survival remained exceptional, and her doctors emphasised that every premature baby’s medical circumstances are different.
From 245 Grams to a Homecoming
After approximately five months in hospital, Saybie was discharged in May 2019.
By then, she weighed around 2.5 kilograms — more than ten times her birth weight.
Her departure marked an emotional milestone for the family and the medical professionals who had cared for her since the day she was born.
At the time, the hospital described Saybie as the world’s smallest surviving baby, based on the available international registry of extremely low birth-weight infants.
A Tiny Baby With an Extraordinary Story
Saybie’s journey attracted international attention because of her exceptionally low birth weight and remarkable progress.
Her story also highlighted the specialised medical care required by babies born at the limits of viability.
For her family, however, the most important achievement was not a record or a headline.
It was the moment they could finally leave the hospital with the daughter they had once feared they would lose within an hour of her birth.
She entered the world weighing less than a pound. Five months later, she went home.
