Georgia Mother Sentenced to Life in Prison After 4-Year-Old Son Dies from Fatal Injuries in Abuse Case

Georgia Mother Sentenced to Life in 4-Year-Old Son’s Death as Father’s Criminal Case Continues

A Georgia mother has been sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years after being convicted in the death of her 4-year-old son, Jessiah Sasfras. The child died in February 2023 after suffering fatal head injuries, and investigators reported evidence of repeated abuse.

Malisha Sasfras was convicted in May 2024 of felony murder, three counts of first-degree cruelty to children, and two counts of aggravated battery. A judge sentenced her on June 28, 2024, according to local news reports.

The boy’s father, Javonte Harris, was also charged in connection with Jessiah’s death. His case remained pending in the latest reports reviewed for this article.

Emergency Call Leads to Investigation

On February 11, 2023, emergency responders were called to an apartment along Candler Road in DeKalb County, near Decatur, Georgia, after a child was found unresponsive.

Jessiah was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators later determined that he died from blunt-force trauma to the head. The medical examiner estimated that the fatal injury had occurred approximately six to eight hours before his death.

According to prosecutors, medical personnel found extensive injuries on the boy’s body, including bruises and scars in different stages of healing. Some injuries appeared consistent with a belt or cord, and officials also described marks around his neck and injuries to his wrists.

The findings prompted a broader investigation into what had happened to the child before he was brought to the hospital.

Mother Convicted in the Case

Investigators said Sasfras was the only adult at home during the period when Jessiah sustained his fatal injury. She told authorities that she did not know how he had been injured, according to court-related reports.

Prosecutors also presented social media messages between Sasfras and Harris in which they allegedly discussed beating the boy over bed-wetting and daytime accidents.

The jury found Sasfras guilty of multiple offenses related to the abuse and death of her son. Her sentence — life in prison plus an additional 20 years — reflected the seriousness of the convictions.

Father Also Faces Charges

Harris was arrested in Atlanta in February 2023 after authorities searched for him following the initial investigation. Officials alleged that he had punched Jessiah and inflicted other injuries during the days leading up to the boy’s death.

In May 2023, a grand jury indicted Harris on charges including second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other local outlets.

His case was reported as still pending after Sasfras’s conviction and sentencing. The charges against Harris remain allegations unless proven in court.

A Tragic Case With Lasting Consequences

Jessiah’s death prompted a criminal investigation that revealed evidence of serious injuries and led to charges against both parents. For the child’s family and the wider community, the case highlighted the importance of recognizing possible signs of child abuse and ensuring that concerns are brought to the attention of authorities.

Sasfras’s conviction has resulted in a life sentence, while the legal proceedings involving Harris remain a separate matter.
