He Walked Outside After His Team Lost — and Heard a Woman Crying for Help
Alastair Cass thought he was simply stepping outside to cool off after a disappointing football match.
Instead, the 40-year-old businessman from Devon, England, ended up helping save a woman’s life.
Cass had been watching Arsenal lose 3–0 to Brighton when frustration got the better of him. He left his home and began walking across his large rural property.
Then he heard something unusual.
At first, Cass could not make out what the sound was. But after hearing it again, he became concerned and decided to investigate.
He jumped on his quad bike and headed toward a valley near the river. As he got closer, the sound became clearer.
It was a woman calling for help.
Cass eventually found her trapped in a ditch, buried in thick mud up to her chest. She had reportedly been stuck for around four hours and was cold and exhausted.
He immediately tried to help.
Cass returned home to collect rope and wooden boards, which he used to try to reach the woman without becoming trapped himself. But the mud was too deep and the suction was too powerful for him to pull her out alone.

He then contacted emergency services.
Firefighters, specialist rescue teams, police officers, ambulance crews and other emergency responders arrived at the scene. The rescue operation was difficult because of the dangerous terrain and unstable mud.
After around two hours of work, the rescue teams finally managed to free the woman, identified as Sallie.
She was taken to hospital and remained there until the early hours of the following morning.
Later, Sallie sent Cass a thank-you card. Her message included a surprising reference to the football match that had started the entire chain of events.
“Thanks to Arsenal for being rubbish at football!” she wrote.
The joke reflected the strange coincidence behind the rescue. Had Arsenal produced a better result, Cass might have stayed inside watching the post-match coverage. Instead, the disappointing result sent him outside — where he happened to hear a stranger in desperate need of help.
For Cass, the experience was a reminder that an ordinary decision can sometimes have extraordinary consequences.
A frustrating afternoon that began with a football defeat ended with a woman being brought safely out of the mud.
And for Sallie, the man who walked outside after a bad match became the person she was most grateful to see that day.
