Hundreds of Hot Air Balloons Fill the Sky Over New Mexico
The skies over Albuquerque, New Mexico, have once again been transformed into a colorful spectacle as the 2026 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta brings hundreds of hot air balloons together for nine days of flights, music and community celebrations.
The annual event began on October 3 and runs through October 11 at Balloon Fiesta Park. The festival is one of Albuquerque’s biggest annual attractions, drawing balloon pilots and visitors from around the world.
Each morning, balloons take to the sky during scheduled launches, creating a striking scene above the city and the nearby Sandia Mountains. Some balloons have traditional designs, while others feature unusual shapes that make them especially popular with spectators.
The festival is also a hands-on experience. Visitors can walk among balloons as crews prepare them for flight, watch pilots and launch teams at work, and take part in activities surrounding the main events.

Monday, October 5, is being celebrated as New Mexico Day. Organizers are offering free general admission to New Mexico residents who show proof of residency, as a way of thanking the local community for its long-standing support of the event.
The celebration extends beyond the launch field. Albuquerque’s Historic Old Town is hosting live music and cultural performances throughout Balloon Fiesta week, while the city’s Balloon Museum is also offering a special free-admission day for New Mexico residents.
For many people, the fiesta has become more than a ballooning event. It is a yearly tradition that brings families, visitors, pilots, volunteers, musicians and local businesses together around one of the most recognizable sights in New Mexico.
As the festival continues this week, the morning sky over Albuquerque will remain filled with colorful balloons — turning an ordinary sunrise into a shared community spectacle.
