Hurricane Nolo Threatens Hawaii With Life-Threatening Flooding

Residents on Hawaii’s Big Island are preparing for potentially life-threatening flooding and damaging winds as Hurricane Nolo moves toward the islands.

Hawaii Braces for Heavy Rain

As of Friday morning, Hurricane Nolo was about 175 miles (280 kilometers) south of South Point on Hawaii Island, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (165 km/h) and was moving northeast at about 5 mph (7 km/h).

Forecasters warned that the storm could produce dangerous flash flooding and damaging waves over the weekend. Heavy rainfall was expected across parts of the Big Island, with some areas potentially receiving more than a foot of rain.

The National Hurricane Center warned that life-threatening flash flooding could occur, particularly in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall and rapid runoff.

Residents Prepare for the Storm

Hawaii officials urged residents to prepare emergency supplies and remain in safe locations as the storm approaches. More than 230 Hawaii National Guard members were activated as part of the state’s emergency preparations.

Officials also warned people not to travel unnecessarily once dangerous conditions begin. Heavy rain can quickly make roads unsafe, while strong winds may bring down trees and power lines.

Michael Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center, advised people on the Big Island to shelter in safe locations and avoid entering areas affected by flooding.

Other Islands Could Also See Heavy Rain

The Big Island is expected to receive the most significant impacts, but forecasters said other Hawaiian islands could also experience heavy rainfall.

Maui was also warned of potentially dangerous flooding and mudslides. Authorities continued monitoring Nolo’s movement as forecasts were updated.

Storm Conditions Expected to Continue

The National Hurricane Center said Nolo was expected to remain a significant weather threat through the weekend. Residents were urged to follow local emergency instructions and monitor official weather updates.

For communities across Hawaii, the immediate concern is not only the hurricane’s winds but also the possibility of prolonged heavy rainfall, flash floods, mudslides and dangerous ocean conditions.
