Iowa School Field Trip Ends in Tragedy as Teacher and 10-Year-Old Student Die at Lake MacBride

A fifth-grade field trip in Iowa ended in tragedy after a teacher and one of her students died in a water incident at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area.

The incident happened on September 22, 2026, during a “School of the Wild” field trip involving fifth-grade students from Borlaug Elementary. The outdoor education trip took place near the Coralville Reservoir spillway at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area.

At around 12:10 p.m., the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office received a report of people in the water. Emergency crews rushed to the area, and approximately 30 minutes later, at about 12:43 p.m., responders recovered a woman from the reservoir. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later identified the woman as Hannah Jorgensen, 24, of Tiffin, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary. She was a member of the same school community as the students participating in the field trip.

A 10-year-old student remained missing after the initial recovery. Search crews continued working through the afternoon and evening, but the operation was suspended overnight because of the conditions. Investigators returned the following morning to resume the search.

At approximately 1:24 p.m. on September 23, rescuers recovered the body of the missing child from the Coralville Reservoir. Authorities identified him as Ahmed Osman, 10, of Iowa City, a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary.

More than a dozen agencies assisted with the search and recovery operation. Responding organizations included the Johnson County Metro Dive Team, local fire departments, emergency management officials, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa State Patrol, University of Iowa Police Department, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other emergency agencies.

The Iowa City Community School District described Hannah and Ahmed as deeply valued members of the school community and said counselors and additional support personnel would be available to help students and staff cope with the loss.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not publicly released a detailed explanation of how the teacher and student entered the water or what led to the tragedy.

For the Borlaug Elementary community, what began as an educational day outdoors ended with the devastating loss of a young teacher and a 10-year-old student, leaving families, classmates and colleagues mourning as the investigation continues.
