Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita Wins Asian Games Marathon Gold on Home Soil

Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita won the men’s marathon gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games on Saturday, producing a decisive late surge to finish first in front of the home crowd in Nagoya.

Yamashita Makes His Move Late

The 29-year-old Japanese runner stayed behind the leaders through much of the race as runners from India, China and North Korea shared the pace.

Yamashita was part of a six-man leading group at the halfway point. With around 10 kilometres remaining, India’s Sawan Barwal and North Korea’s Han Il Ryong were still among the runners setting the pace.

As the leaders began to tire, Yamashita made his move. He accelerated away from the group and built a clear advantage on the way to the finish.

Gold in 2 Hours, 10 Minutes and 49 Seconds

Yamashita crossed the finish line at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 49 seconds.

India’s Sawan Barwal finished second in 2:11:37, setting a personal best, while China’s Feng Peiyou took the bronze medal in 2:12:13.

Yamashita’s victory gave Japan its seventh men’s marathon gold medal in Asian Games history.

A Special Victory in Nagoya

The victory was particularly significant because Yamashita was competing in front of Japanese supporters during the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Born in Nagasaki, Yamashita is a member of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. His personal marathon best is 2:05:51, recorded at the 2023 Tokyo Marathon, according to the Japan Association of Athletics Federations.

Heavy rain fell during Saturday morning’s race, but Yamashita remained patient before making his decisive move in the closing stages.

India Ends a 44-Year Wait

Although Yamashita took the gold, India’s Sawan Barwal also made history by winning the country’s first men’s Asian Games marathon medal since 1982.

Barwal’s silver was also his second national record of the year after he lowered India’s long-standing marathon record at the Rotterdam Marathon in April.

The result made the final stages of the race particularly memorable, with Yamashita holding off Barwal to secure gold while the Indian runner protected his silver-medal position.

A Dramatic Finish to a Rainy Morning

Yamashita’s victory came after more than two hours of racing through Nagoya’s wet streets. Rather than leading throughout, he conserved energy and waited until his rivals began to fade.

His late attack proved decisive, allowing the Japanese runner to enter the stadium alone and finish to strong support from the home crowd.
