The long-running mystery surrounding Madeleine McCann has taken another dramatic turn after Christian Brueckner, the German man publicly identified as the prime suspect in the case, reportedly admitted that he was in the Praia da Luz area on the night the three-year-old disappeared.

Brueckner reportedly told the Mail on Sunday that he was approximately 150 yards — around 450 feet — from the holiday resort where Madeleine was staying with her family in May 2007.

His explanation is striking: he says he was nearby because he was selling drugs, not because he had anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.

According to the reported interview, Brueckner said he had been in Spain and had brought cannabis into Portugal. He claimed he was on the beach near the resort when Madeleine disappeared.

He also alleged that police stopped him three times that night while officers were searching the area for the missing child.

Brueckner reportedly described trying to leave the area quickly after seeing police activity.

He said there were flashing blue lights and checkpoints throughout the area and claimed he was worried about being caught with drugs.

According to his account, he managed to leave without police discovering what he was carrying.

The revelation is significant because Brueckner had previously been reluctant to discuss his whereabouts around the time Madeleine disappeared.

He has repeatedly denied any involvement in the girl’s disappearance and continues to maintain that authorities are wrongly focusing on him.

WHY HIS CLAIMS ARE ATTRACTING ATTENTION

Madeleine disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007, while her parents were dining nearby with friends.
