A 19-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver has pleaded not guilty to a charge of reckless and dangerous driving following a crash in Johor, Malaysia, that killed five people, including his older brother and a 10-year-old girl.

Goh Yin Zun appeared at the Kluang Magistrates’ Court on September 18, where he was charged over the fatal collision that occurred on June 1.

According to the charge sheet, Goh allegedly drove in a manner dangerous to the public at around 1:19pm along KM27 of Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam.

The victims included Goh’s 22-year-old older brother and four members of another family, including a 10-year-old girl.

Reports said the two brothers were allegedly travelling at high speed and may have been racing before the crash. Goh’s brother reportedly lost control of his BMW, which then collided with several vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.

Under Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987, a conviction for the offence can carry a prison sentence of up to five years and a maximum fine of RM15,000.

Prosecutors initially requested bail of RM20,000, but Goh’s defence lawyer asked the court to reduce the amount. The lawyer argued that Goh was a young offender studying for a business studies diploma in Singapore and had cooperated with authorities during his initial detention and after being released on police bail.

The magistrate subsequently granted bail of RM10,000 with one surety. Goh was also ordered to report to a police station once a month while the case proceeds.

The court has scheduled the next mention of the case for November 20, when documents are also expected to be submitted.

The investigation and court proceedings will determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and the allegations against the accused.
