Missing Kenyan Student Found Alive After More Than a Month

An 18-year-old Kenyan student who disappeared more than a month ago has been found alive, bringing an end to weeks of searching by her family.

Silvia Nyakio, a Form Four student at Kerugoya Girls High School in Kirinyaga County, disappeared on August 15, 2026, shortly before she was expected to return to school for preparation for her final examinations.

Her family spent weeks trying to locate her. Her mother, Millicent Mumbi, said relatives repeatedly searched the area and visited police as they tried to establish what had happened to the teenager.

The breakthrough came on Tuesday night in Mwea, Kirinyaga County. A woman in the area recognised Nyakio after seeing a photograph that had been circulated by her family.

According to Mumbi, the woman told her that a girl matching Nyakio’s description had recently appeared at her home asking for food. She had apparently been moving around the area and was unable to find her way home.

Mumbi immediately went to the woman’s home and found her daughter alive.

The reunion was emotional. According to her mother, Nyakio appeared confused about the period she had been missing and asked why her family had not been able to find her.

The teenager also appeared physically weak and had lost significant weight during the time she was away. She was taken to hospital for medical assessment and treatment following her recovery.

Despite everything she had experienced, Nyakio reportedly told her mother that she wanted to return to school. She had been preparing for her final examinations before she disappeared.

Her family had previously described her as a quiet and disciplined student and said there had been no obvious indication that she intended to leave home. Her grandmother had also said that Nyakio hoped to become a teacher.

Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and what happened during the more than month she was missing. The details of where she stayed and how she travelled to Mwea have not yet been established publicly.

For her family, the immediate priority is her recovery after an anxious search that lasted several weeks.
