Mom Said Goodbye to Her 18-Month-Old Baby — Hours Later, Someone Discovered He Was Still Alive
For Arizona mother Alexus Fiordilino, February 8 became a day of unimaginable heartbreak — followed by a discovery that would leave her family searching for answers.
Her 18-month-old son, Vincent Lorenzo, had been found in the family’s swimming pool and rushed to a hospital in Gilbert, Arizona.
Doctors pronounced the little boy dead that evening.
But approximately five and a half hours later, something extraordinary happened.
A Mother’s Worst Nightmare
Following the drowning incident, Vincent was transported to Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert Medical Center.
According to his family’s account, emergency physician Dr. Aryan Toosi pronounced him dead at approximately 6:20 p.m.
Alexus and other family members reportedly questioned whether the toddler was still breathing. They say their concerns were dismissed.
Believing she had lost her little boy, the devastated mother faced the unbearable reality of saying goodbye.
The Discovery Nobody Expected
Hours passed before personnel from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office arrived to retrieve Vincent’s body.
What they discovered changed everything.
The toddler was alive. He was breathing.
Approximately five and a half hours after being pronounced dead, Vincent was discovered to have survived.
For his mother, the news brought overwhelming relief alongside painful questions about what had happened during those missing hours.

A Family Searching for Answers
The circumstances surrounding Vincent’s initial medical assessment have since become the subject of legal proceedings.
His family has raised concerns about the testing used to determine his condition and whether appropriate warming measures were attempted.
These allegations remain disputed. The physician’s attorney expressed concern for Vincent but declined to discuss specific details, citing patient privacy and ongoing litigation.
A Little Boy Given Another Chance
For Alexus, discovering that Vincent was alive after believing she had lost him was an emotional experience unlike anything she could have imagined.
Although grateful that her son survived, she has also spoken about the devastation of knowing he had been left alone after being declared dead.
The family continues seeking answers about the medical decisions made that evening.
Vincent’s story has attracted attention because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his survival and the questions raised about his care.
For his mother, however, the most important part of the story remains simple: the little boy she thought she had lost was still alive.
