Father of Two Hailed as a Hero After Fatally Stopping Oregon School Gunman

A father whose two young daughters attend an Oregon elementary school is being praised by his family after he intervened during a deadly shooting that left children and a teacher dead.
Kaylub Giamanco was identified by his family as the man who confronted the gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on October 15, 2026. According to reports, Giamanco was heading home after lunch when he saw the suspect entering the school.
Authorities said the 16-year-old gunman opened fire inside the school, killing three children and a teacher and injuring others. As the attack unfolded, a teacher reportedly tried to stop the shooter before Giamanco intervened and fatally shot him.
Giamanco’s family described him as a devoted father and a person who cares deeply about his community. His mother said the incident had left him traumatized, despite the praise he has received for his actions.
In a particularly emotional account, his mother recalled that he told her he had shot the gunman after learning that children were being attacked at his daughters’ school. She said she reassured him that he had acted to protect others, while he reportedly expressed sadness that he could not save everyone.

The family has asked for privacy as Giamanco and his daughters cope with the aftermath. They also expressed gratitude to first responders, school staff and members of the community who have offered support.
Although Giamanco is being praised for intervening, the tragedy has left the Bend community grieving the lives lost and waiting for answers about what led to the attack. Authorities said the motive remains under investigation.
