The Anniversary Surprise Part 5 – The Anniversary I Finally Remembered

The Anniversary Surprise
Part 5 – The Anniversary I Finally Remembered
Three months later, the divorce was finalized.
Liam’s financial misconduct was documented, and the court addressed the disputed transfers and property claims according to the evidence and applicable law.
He was ordered to return the money he had improperly transferred from our joint savings, and the court established a parenting arrangement that protected Hailey’s interests.
The house remained mine.
Vanessa ended her relationship with Liam shortly after discovering that he had lied about nearly everything.
As for Liam, he eventually sent me a long email.
He apologized for cheating.
He apologized for missing Hailey’s first weeks.
He even admitted that he had taken me for granted.
But by then, his apologies no longer mattered.
I had started a new chapter.
My parents helped me care for Hailey while I returned to work part-time. I hired a wonderful nanny and slowly rebuilt the routine I had lost.
One Sunday afternoon, I found the anniversary photograph we had taken two years earlier.
Liam had his arm around my waist.
I was smiling at the camera, believing I had married the man who would love me forever.
I looked at the picture for a long moment.
Then I placed it in a drawer.
Not because I hated the woman in that photograph.
But because I finally understood that she deserved better.
That evening, I took Hailey into the garden.
The sky was painted with soft pink and golden light.
She giggled when I kissed her little cheeks.
I smiled.
“Happy anniversary to us, sweetheart.”
It wasn’t our wedding anniversary anymore.
It was the anniversary of the day I discovered the truth.
The day I stopped begging someone to love me.
The day I chose myself and my daughter.
And if Liam ever wondered what my final anniversary surprise had been, the answer was simple.
I gave him exactly what he had asked for.
A life without me.
But I gave myself something much better.
A future without lies.
The End.
