THE DOG WHO WAITED FOR THE BABY

Nobody knew why Max had suddenly become obsessed with Emily’s pregnancy.

Every night, the Golden Retriever followed her into the bedroom.

Emily would lie down.

Daniel would turn off the lights.

And Max would quietly walk over and rest his head against Emily’s belly.

At first, Daniel thought it was funny.

“Looks like someone doesn’t want to share his mommy.”

Emily would laugh.

“Maybe he’s jealous.”

But Max never acted jealous.

He acted protective.

If Emily moved, he moved.

If she sat down, he stayed beside her.

If she rested, he lay near her feet.

And every evening, he returned to her belly.

Then one night, something happened that made both Emily and Daniel stop laughing.

The baby kicked.

Emily gasped.

Max immediately lifted his head.

He stared at her belly.

Then he slowly placed one paw against it.

Daniel knelt beside them.

“Did you feel that?”

Max’s tail began wagging.

Emily looked down at him.

Her eyes became watery.

“I think he knows.”

From that night on, Max seemed even more determined to stay close.

He was waiting for someone.

Someone he had never seen.

Someone he had never smelled.

Someone he had never held.

But somehow…

someone he already loved.

Weeks later, Emily and Daniel finally returned home from the hospital.

And they brought someone with them.

A tiny newborn.

Wrapped in a soft white blanket.

Max ran toward the front door.

Then stopped.

The entire world seemed to disappear around him.

He stared at the baby.

His tail slowly began wagging.

Emily smiled.

“Come meet your baby brother.”

Max approached carefully.

He sniffed the blanket.

Then looked at Emily.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at the baby.

He didn’t jump.

He didn’t bark.

He simply stood there.

Gentle.

Curious.

Protective.

That evening, the baby slept peacefully in his crib.

Max sat beside it.

He watched the baby breathe.

He listened to every tiny sound.

And when the baby moved, Max immediately lifted his head.

Daniel smiled.

“He’s already guarding him.”

But then something even more beautiful happened.

Max walked toward his toy basket.

He searched through his toys.

And pulled out his favorite stuffed teddy bear.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

Max had owned that teddy bear for years.

It was the toy he loved most.

Yet instead of taking it back to his bed…

Max carried it toward the baby’s crib.

He gently placed it beside the sleeping baby.

Emily covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

Daniel knelt beside Max.

“You gave him your favorite toy.”

Max looked up at him.

Then he turned back toward the baby.

Daniel gently touched his head.

“You’re going to be a great big brother.”

Max lay down beside the crib.

And he stayed there.

The family had worried that bringing home a baby might make Max feel forgotten.

Instead, something completely different happened.

Max didn’t lose his place.

He found a new purpose.

The dog who had spent months sleeping beside Emily’s belly was now sleeping beside the baby’s crib.

The dog who had once waited for the baby…

was finally protecting him.

And perhaps that’s what made Emily cry the hardest.

Max had loved the baby before he ever met him.

Before the first cry.

Before the first smile.

Before the tiny hand ever touched his golden fur.

He had already chosen him.

As his family.

As his little brother.

As someone worth protecting.

That night, Emily watched from the doorway as Max slept beside the crib.

The teddy bear rested beside the newborn.

Max’s head lay on his paws.

And every few seconds, he opened his eyes to check on the baby.

Emily whispered:

“You were waiting for him all along.”

And somehow, Max seemed to understand.

Because he didn’t need anyone to tell him what his new job was.

He already knew.

He wasn’t just the family dog anymore.

He was the baby’s protector.

His first furry friend.

His big brother.

And the little teddy bear beside the crib was his very first gift.
