The Last Ring PART 2 — THE WOMAN HE NEVER KNEW

The Last Ring
PART 2 — THE WOMAN HE NEVER KNEW
The SUV drove for nearly two hours before stopping in front of a private estate overlooking the Hudson River.
Elena stepped out carefully, one hand resting on her pregnant stomach.
A woman in her sixties hurried down the marble steps.
“Elena!”
“Grandmother.”
Margaret Vance wrapped her granddaughter in a warm embrace.
“I was beginning to think you’d never leave that man.”
Elena lowered her eyes.
“I should have left sooner.”
Margaret gently touched her cheek before looking at the driver.
“Is everything ready?”
“Yes, Mrs. Vance. The attorneys are waiting inside.”
Elena followed her grandmother into the estate.
On the enormous dining table lay several documents bearing the Vance family seal.
For years, Dante had believed Elena was simply the daughter of a wealthy businessman who had died when she was young.
He never knew the full truth.
The Vance family owned a private international shipping network, several Manhattan skyscrapers, and controlling interests in three major financial institutions.
And Elena wasn’t merely an heiress.
She was the sole chairwoman of Vance Global Holdings.
Her grandfather had deliberately kept her identity quiet because he wanted her to marry someone who loved her, not her fortune.
Unfortunately, Dante had failed that test.

“Your husband has been calling every attorney in New York,” Margaret said.
Elena gave a tired smile.
“He’s not my husband anymore. Not in my heart.”
Her grandmother placed a hand over hers.
“Then let’s make sure the law catches up.”
Meanwhile, at the Moretti mansion, Dante was destroying everything in sight.
A crystal glass shattered against the fireplace.
“How could nobody know who she was?”
His lawyer, Richard Cole, stood several feet away.
“Sir, the Vance family has maintained an unusually private financial structure. Most of Elena’s assets were placed in trusts before your marriage.”
“Can I freeze them?”
“No.”
Dante’s jaw tightened.
Richard hesitated before continuing.
“There’s something else. Mrs. Moretti has submitted evidence concerning your offshore accounts. Several transfers were made using her name without authorization.”
Dante stared at him.
“What?”
“Your wife may have known about those transactions for months.”
Before Dante could respond, his phone rang.
It was Sophia.
He answered with a furious expression.
“What do you want?”
“Dante, please. I need your help. I’m at the penthouse, and your men won’t let me inside.”
“You’re no longer welcome in any of my properties.”
“But you promised me—”
“I promised you nothing.”
He ended the call.
Then his lieutenant, Marco, entered the room carrying a thick envelope.
“Boss, we found something.”
Dante opened it.
Inside were photographs of Sophia meeting with one of his business rivals, Lorenzo Vitale.
The dates were from several months earlier.
There were also copies of messages discussing information about Moretti shipping routes.
Dante’s expression became terrifyingly cold.
“She was selling my information?”
Marco nodded.
“And there’s another thing. Elena’s security team has already moved her personal belongings out of the estate. They also took the original documents from the east-wing office.”
Dante looked at the photographs again.
For the first time, he wondered whether Sophia had been the only person deceiving him.
His phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
You should have treated your wife better, Dante. She was the only person protecting your empire.
He immediately called the number.
It was disconnected.
Dante slowly lowered the phone.
Across the city, Elena stood before a large bedroom window, watching the evening sunlight disappear over the river.
Her phone rang.
It was Dante.
She answered after several seconds.
“Elena, we need to talk.”
“No, Dante. We don’t.”
“Please. I know about the Vance company. I know what you own. Why didn’t you tell me?”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Because I wanted to know whether you loved me without knowing what I could give you.”
Silence.
Then Dante whispered, “I did love you.”
Elena’s voice trembled slightly.
“Then why was I never enough?”
He had no answer.
She ended the call.
And for the first time, Dante understood that losing Elena was not simply losing his wife.
He had lost the only person who had ever stood beside him without fearing his name.
But the worst discovery was still waiting.
