The Letter He Never Expected

PART 3 — THE DIVORCE HE COULDN’T STOP

Three days later, Claire was strong enough to sit up in bed.

Alexander remained in the NICU, but his condition was gradually improving.

Every morning, Emma helped Claire visit him.

Vincent also came.

He never missed a visit, bringing medical supplies, arranging consultations with specialists, and spending hours watching his son through the incubator.

But Claire refused to speak to him unless absolutely necessary.

On the fourth morning, Vincent entered her hospital room carrying a small bouquet of white roses.

Claire looked at the flowers.

“Please don’t.”

He stopped.

“I just wanted to bring you something.”

“I don’t need flowers, Vincent.”

He placed them on the table.

“How are you feeling?”

“Better.”

“And Alexander?”

“His doctor says he’s improving.”

Vincent nodded, trying to hide his relief.

Then he pulled a chair closer.

“Claire, I want to take responsibility. I’ll do anything you ask. I’ll transfer the mansion, the company shares, whatever you want.”

She looked at him quietly.

“Do you think this is about money?”

“No. I know I hurt you.”

“You don’t know anything.”

Her voice trembled.

“When I was lying on that operating table, I wasn’t thinking about your mansion or your bank accounts. I was thinking about whether my baby would survive. I was wondering if I would ever get to hold him.”

Vincent’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

She looked directly at him.

“You had a choice. You could have left Sophia for one night and come to the hospital. But you didn’t.”

Vincent lowered his head.

“I was wrong.”

“Yes. You were.”

Claire reached into the bedside drawer and pulled out a folder.

“I’ve spoken to my lawyer. These are the divorce papers.”

Vincent stared at them.

“Claire, please. Not now.”

“Especially now.”

She placed the documents on the table.

“I won’t raise my son in a marriage where his mother has to compete with another woman for his father’s attention.”

“I’ll end everything with Sophia.”

“That isn’t my concern anymore.”

Vincent looked devastated.

“Five years, Claire. Are you really going to throw away five years?”

She gave him a sad smile.

“I didn’t throw them away, Vincent. I spent five years trying to save something you never cared enough to protect.”

He slowly reached for the folder.

“I won’t sign.”

Claire didn’t look surprised.

“Then my lawyer will handle it through the court.”

Before Vincent could respond, his phone rang.

It was Daniel.

“Sir, Sophia is at the Moretti estate. She’s furious about the canceled properties. She’s telling everyone Mrs. Moretti is manipulating you.”

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“Tell security not to let her in.”

“She says she has something important to tell you.”

“I don’t care.”

But Daniel hesitated.

“Sir, she also claims the baby isn’t yours.”

Vincent went completely still.

Claire looked up.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Vincent slowly turned toward his assistant.

“Bring Sophia to my office. I’ll deal with this personally.”

He looked back at Claire.

“Don’t worry. Nobody will be allowed to interfere with our son.”

Claire’s expression remained cold.

“He’s my son too, Vincent. And I don’t need you to protect him from a woman you chose over us.”

Later that afternoon, Sophia arrived at the Moretti estate wearing an expensive designer outfit.

She walked into Vincent’s office as if she still belonged there.

“Finally! I’ve been calling you for days!”

Vincent didn’t offer her a seat.

“Why did you tell people Claire’s baby isn’t mine?”

Sophia blinked.

“I was only trying to protect you.”

“Answer my question.”

She folded her arms.

“Vincent, think about it. Claire suddenly wants a divorce, and now she’s using the baby to control you. Maybe she got pregnant on purpose.”

Vincent stared at her.

“You’re talking about my son.”

Sophia stepped closer.

“I’ve known you since childhood. I was there before Claire. You promised you’d always take care of me.”

“And I did.”

“You bought me a house!”

“With money that should have been spent taking care of my family.”

Sophia’s expression changed.

“Your family? You mean Claire? She’s already replacing me!”

Vincent stood.

“Listen carefully. There is no place for you in my marriage anymore.”

Sophia’s eyes filled with tears.

“So you’re choosing her?”

“No.”

He looked at her with a coldness she had never seen before.

“I’m choosing my son. And I’m finally accepting that I should have chosen my wife a long time ago.”

Sophia suddenly laughed bitterly.

“You’re making a terrible mistake. Claire will never forgive you.”

Vincent looked toward the window.

“Perhaps she shouldn’t.”

He called security and ordered them to escort Sophia out.

That evening, he returned to the hospital.

Claire was sitting beside Alexander’s incubator, watching their son sleep.

Vincent stopped at the doorway.

“His doctor says he may be able to leave the NICU in a few weeks.”

Claire nodded.

“I know. Emma told me.”

He approached carefully.

“Can I hold his hand?”

After a long silence, Claire nodded.

Vincent slipped his finger through the incubator opening.

Alexander’s tiny hand curled around it.

The billionaire who had commanded thousands of people suddenly began crying.

“Hello, little one,” he whispered. “I’m your father.”

Claire watched silently.

Then she spoke.

“Vincent, I need you to understand something.”

He looked at her.

“I will never prevent you from knowing your son if you respect his safety and the law. But that doesn’t mean we’re getting back together.”

His smile disappeared.

“Claire…”

“I’ve already made my decision.”

She looked down at Alexander.

“I want him to grow up surrounded by love. Not expensive gifts, not empty promises, and certainly not a father who only realizes his mistakes when he’s about to lose everything.”

Vincent nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

He wanted to ask her to reconsider.

He wanted to promise that he could become a better husband.

But for the first time, he understood that his promises meant nothing without years of actions to support them.

As he turned to leave, Claire called his name.

“Vincent.”

He stopped immediately.

She looked at him with tired eyes.

“One day, when Alexander asks why his parents aren’t together, I won’t teach him to hate you.”

Vincent’s eyes filled.

“What will you tell him?”

Claire gently touched their son’s tiny hand.

“I’ll tell him that his father had a choice, and his mother eventually learned to make one too.”

Vincent walked out without another word.

Two weeks later, the divorce papers arrived at his office.

This time, he signed them.

And beneath his signature, he wrote one final sentence:

I will spend the rest of my life making sure our son never has to wonder whether he is loved.

But Claire never saw that sentence.

She had already taken Alexander home with Emma.

For the first time in five years, she was no longer Mrs. Vincent Moretti.

She was simply Claire Bennett.

And she was finally free.
