The Letter That Brought Him Back
PART 2 — THE SECRET IN THE PHOTOGRAPH
The knock came again.
Emily stood frozen on the porch, her face drained of color. Daniel turned toward the door, his instincts warning him that the next few minutes would change everything.
A tall man in his late sixties stepped inside. He wore an old brown coat and carried a leather folder beneath his arm.
“Emily,” he said gently. “You can’t keep hiding the truth.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. “Who are you?”
“My name is Robert Hayes. I was Emily’s doctor nine years ago.”
Daniel looked at Emily. “Your doctor?”
Robert nodded. “After you threw her out, Emily collapsed at a bus station. She was taken to a hospital, where we discovered she was pregnant.”
The world seemed to stop.
“Pregnant?” Daniel whispered.
Emily’s tears began falling.
“I found out that night, Daniel. I was going to tell you before our argument, but you wouldn’t even let me finish a sentence.”
Daniel remembered that terrible evening. He remembered shouting about business losses, accusing her of being a distraction, and refusing to listen when she begged him to hear her out.
He had never known she was carrying his child.
“Why didn’t you call me?” he asked, his voice breaking.
Emily stared at him in disbelief.
“I tried. I called your office. I called your private number. I even went to your company building when I was seven months pregnant.”
Daniel shook his head. “Nobody told me.”
“Your assistant said you had instructed everyone not to let me contact you. When I begged to see you, security escorted me out.”
He felt the blood drain from his face.
For nine years, he had believed Emily had abandoned him just as easily as he had abandoned her.
Now he was discovering that she had tried to reach him.
Robert opened his leather folder and removed a faded medical document.
“Emily gave birth to twins,” he explained. “A boy and a girl. Thomas and Lily.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway, where the children were watching from behind the doorframe.
“Both of them are mine?”
Emily nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Daniel gripped the edge of the table beside him.
Two children.
His children had grown up without him while he spent nine years building an empire.
“Why didn’t you tell me the truth when I arrived?” he asked.
“Because I wanted to know whether you had changed,” Emily replied. “I wanted to see if you would apologize without demanding something in return.”
Daniel lowered his head.

“I deserve that.”
“No,” she said quietly. “You deserve to understand what your choices cost.”
She told him about the tiny apartment she had rented after leaving Manhattan, the exhausting jobs she had taken while pregnant, and the nights she had gone without dinner so her children could eat.
Eventually, she had moved to Kentucky, where living expenses were lower and a kind elderly woman had helped her find work.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
For the first time, he understood that Emily hadn’t simply disappeared from his life.
She had struggled to survive in the life he had forced upon her.
Then Thomas stepped forward, still holding the wedding photograph.
“Are you really my daddy?” he asked.
Daniel knelt in front of him.
“If your mommy says so, then yes.”
Thomas studied his face suspiciously.
“Why didn’t you come before?”
Daniel opened his mouth, but no answer came.
Lily appeared beside her brother.
“Does that mean we’re going to live in your big house now?”
Emily immediately shook her head.
“No, sweetheart. Nothing is changing today.”
Daniel looked up at her.
“I won’t force you to do anything. I swear.”
“You’ve made promises before,” she replied.
“I know. This time, I’ll prove it.”
Robert cleared his throat.
“There’s one more thing you should know, Daniel.”
He removed another document from the folder.
“Emily didn’t invite you here. Someone else did. And that person has been watching your family for years.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Who?”
Robert glanced toward the window.
“Your younger brother, Richard.”
Daniel went completely still.
Richard had always resented him. Years ago, he had tried to take control of the Whitmore business empire, only to be pushed aside.
“What does Richard have to do with this?”
Robert placed the document on the table.
“Everything. He knew Emily was pregnant. He knew where she lived. And nine years ago, he made sure you never received her letters.”
Daniel stared at the paper.
His brother hadn’t merely kept Emily away from him.
He had stolen nine years from two innocent children.
And Daniel was determined to discover why.
