THE MISTRESS’S FATAL MISTAKE Part 1: A Scandal in Diamonds

THE MISTRESS’S FATAL MISTAKE

Chapter One: A Scandal in Diamonds

The moment Isabella Rossi stepped into the charity ballroom, the entire room fell silent.

Dressed in a shimmering silver gown, with one hand resting protectively on her stomach, she walked straight toward the most powerful man in the city—Alexander Blackwood, the ruthless billionaire whose empire was rumored to be built on blood, secrets, and fear.

Then she turned toward his fiancée.

“I’m carrying Alexander’s child,” Isabella announced, her voice loud enough for every guest to hear. “And I refuse to let another woman marry the father of my baby.”

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.

Hundreds of wealthy guests turned toward Evelyn Harrington, the beautiful heiress who had been engaged to Alexander for six months. Cameras flashed. Whispers spread like wildfire.

Everyone expected Evelyn to burst into tears. Some even waited eagerly for her to slap Isabella before running away in humiliation.

After all, how could a woman compete with a mistress carrying her fiancé’s child?

But Evelyn did none of those things.

She calmly set down her champagne glass, straightened the diamond necklace around her throat, and smiled.

“Congratulations,” she said softly. “You must be very proud of yourself.”

Isabella blinked, momentarily confused.

“Don’t pretend you’re not hurt,” she snapped. “Alexander has been seeing me for over a year. He promised me that once I gave him a son, everything would change.”

Evelyn glanced at Alexander.

He stood motionless beside the stage, his handsome face unreadable. His dark eyes followed every movement she made, but he offered no explanation.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

Still, Evelyn refused to give the crowd the spectacle it wanted.

Instead, she reached for the black leather folder her assistant had placed beside her chair.

“Before you demand that I surrender my engagement,” Evelyn said, “perhaps everyone should learn a little more about the woman who claims she is about to become part of the Blackwood family.”

She opened the folder and removed several documents.

The first was a bank transfer record.

The second was a list of offshore companies.

The third contained photographs of Isabella meeting with men already under investigation for financial crimes.

Evelyn laid the documents across the nearest table.

“Three shell companies. Eleven suspicious transfers. Nearly eighteen million dollars moved through charitable foundations over the past two years.” She looked directly at Isabella. “And every trail leads back to accounts registered under your name.”

The ballroom erupted.

Isabella’s face drained of color.

“Those documents are fake!” she shouted.

“Then you won’t mind explaining why the money intended for children’s hospitals ended up in your private accounts.”

A reporter immediately raised his camera. Another guest began whispering urgently into his phone.

Isabella took a stumbling step backward.

“You can’t do this to me!” she screamed. “You think your family name makes you untouchable?”

“No,” Evelyn replied coolly. “I think evidence makes people accountable.”

For the first time that evening, Alexander moved.

He crossed the ballroom and stopped beside Evelyn, his presence enough to silence several nearby conversations.

“Everyone who received copies of those records,” he announced, “will hand them to my legal team before leaving tonight. The authorities have already been notified.”

Isabella stared at him in disbelief.

“Alexander, you promised you’d protect me!”

His expression hardened.

“I promised to protect the innocent.”

Her lips trembled. Then, with a sudden burst of desperation, she pointed at Evelyn.

“She doesn’t know who she’s dealing with! This was supposed to destroy her! You were supposed to call off the wedding!”

Evelyn’s smile faded.

Supposed to?

She turned toward Alexander, but he was already looking at Isabella with a chilling intensity.

“Get her out of here,” he ordered his security team.

As two guards approached, Isabella struggled against them, shouting threats and accusations until the ballroom doors finally swallowed her voice.

The guests immediately surrounded Evelyn, pretending to congratulate her while secretly hoping for more scandal.

She answered none of their questions.

Instead, she walked onto the terrace, desperate for a moment of silence.

A few seconds later, Alexander followed.

“Evelyn.”

She didn’t turn around.

“Tell me the truth,” she said. “Did you know she would come tonight?”

He remained silent for a moment too long.

Then he said, “I knew someone was planning to hurt you.”

Evelyn faced him, her eyes narrowing.

“And you decided not to tell me?”

“I needed to know who was behind it.”

“So you let another woman announce that she’s carrying your child in front of half the city?”

His jaw tightened.

“I never touched Isabella.”

“Then why did she believe she could destroy our engagement?”

Alexander stepped closer, his voice dropping.

“Because someone convinced her that I would abandon you if she created enough pressure.”

“Who?”

Before he could answer, his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen, and something dark crossed his face.

Evelyn noticed.

“What is it?”

Alexander locked the phone and slipped it into his pocket.

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

She stared at him, suddenly feeling colder than she had all evening.

For six months, she had believed that Alexander’s greatest secret was the criminal empire hidden behind his legitimate businesses.

Now she wondered whether she had ever truly known the man she was about to marry.

“Don’t protect me by lying to me,” she whispered.

For the first time, Alexander looked almost afraid.

Not of Isabella. Not of the police. Not even of the scandal that would soon dominate every newspaper in the country.

He was afraid of what Evelyn might discover next.

Because the documents that had destroyed Isabella’s carefully planned humiliation were only the beginning.

And Evelyn had no idea that the man standing before her had secretly arranged the evidence, guided the investigation, and allowed the entire scandal to unfold for one reason:

To keep her away from a far more dangerous enemy.

An enemy who shared her own last name.

And who had already decided that Evelyn Harrington must never become Alexander Blackwood’s wife.
