THE MOTHER-IN-LAW’S LAST MISTAKE – Part 1: The Daughter-in-Law She Despised

THE MOTHER-IN-LAW’S LAST MISTAKE

Chapter 1: The Daughter-in-Law She Despised

The night Eleanor Harrington decided to throw her daughter-in-law out of the family mansion, she had no idea she was making the biggest mistake of her life.

“Pack your things and leave this house before midnight.”

Eleanor’s cold voice echoed through the luxurious living room of the Harrington estate. Dressed in an elegant silk gown, she stood with her arms crossed, staring at the young woman before her as if she were nothing more than an unwanted servant.

Claire Harrington remained silent.

For three years, she had endured Eleanor’s insults, humiliations, and endless accusations. She had been mocked for her humble background, criticized for her simple clothes, and blamed for every problem that troubled the Harrington family.

Yet she had never complained to her husband, Daniel.

She had loved him too much to make him choose between his wife and his mother.

But tonight, something inside her finally broke.

“May I ask what I have done wrong this time?” Claire asked quietly.

Eleanor let out a contemptuous laugh.

“What have you done? You married into one of the wealthiest families in the country without bringing a single useful connection. You have no influential relatives, no fortune, and no respectable family name. And after three years, you still haven’t given my son the success he deserves.”

Claire lowered her eyes for a moment.

She had heard those words so many times that they should no longer have hurt.

But they did.

“I never asked Daniel for his money,” she replied. “I married him because I loved him.”

“Love?” Eleanor sneered. “Love doesn’t save a failing business. Love doesn’t protect a family legacy. Women like you always have an excuse for being useless.”

Before Claire could respond, a man’s voice came from the staircase.

“Mother, that’s enough!”

Daniel hurried into the room, his face pale with exhaustion. He had just returned from an emergency meeting with the company’s board of directors.

For the past several months, Harrington Group had been suffering enormous losses. Several major investors had withdrawn their support, a crucial acquisition had collapsed, and rumors of bankruptcy were spreading through the financial world.

Daniel had barely slept in days.

Eleanor immediately changed her expression.

“Daniel, darling, I’m only trying to protect you. Your wife has become a burden to this family. She should leave before she damages our reputation any further.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

For a moment, their eyes met.

She silently hoped he would defend her, as he had promised to do when they first married.

Instead, he looked away.

“Claire,” he said wearily, “perhaps it would be better if you stayed somewhere else for a while.”

The words struck harder than any insult Eleanor had ever delivered.

Claire stared at him in disbelief.

“Are you asking me to leave?”

Daniel rubbed his forehead. “I have too many problems to deal with right now. Please don’t make this more difficult.”

She waited for him to say something else.

Anything.

But he remained silent.

At last, Claire nodded.

“All right.”

Eleanor smiled triumphantly, believing she had finally won.

She had no idea that the woman she was throwing out possessed the power to save—or destroy—the Harrington empire.

Claire walked upstairs and returned twenty minutes later carrying a small suitcase. She wore the same modest coat she had arrived in three years earlier, when Daniel had brought her home as his bride.

At the front door, she paused and turned toward her husband.

“Daniel, do you remember what you told me on our wedding day?”

He frowned. “Not now, Claire.”

“You said that no matter what happened, we would face it together.”

His expression tightened.

“That was three years ago. Things are different now.”

Claire gave him a sad smile.

“Yes. They are.”

Then she stepped outside into the cold night.

The heavy doors closed behind her.

Eleanor lifted her chin with satisfaction.

“Finally, some peace in this house.”

Daniel didn’t answer. His phone suddenly rang, and he glanced at the screen.

It was the company’s chief financial officer.

He answered immediately.

“What is it?”

The voice on the other end sounded desperate.

“Mr. Harrington, we have a serious problem. The bank has frozen our credit lines, and our largest creditor is demanding immediate repayment. Unless we secure new financing by tomorrow morning, we may have to declare bankruptcy.”

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

“What? That’s impossible! Call the investors. Call everyone!”

“We already have, sir. There’s only one institution willing to consider a rescue package.”

“Then tell them we’ll accept whatever terms they offer!”

A long silence followed.

“Sir, there’s something you need to know. The investment company controlling the negotiations has refused to speak with anyone except its principal shareholder.”

“Who is it?”

The CFO hesitated.

“Her name is Claire Bennett.”

Daniel froze.

Claire Bennett.

His wife’s maiden name.

Across the city, Claire stood inside a quiet penthouse overlooking the glittering skyline. Her suitcase rested beside the door, untouched.

A woman in a dark business suit approached her and handed her a tablet.

“Madam, the Harrington Group’s financial situation is even worse than our analysts predicted. If we withdraw our offer, the company will likely collapse within forty-eight hours.”

Claire looked at the documents.

For three years, she had hidden her identity, choosing a quiet life beside the man she loved instead of revealing that she was the principal heir to Bennett International, a global investment empire worth billions.

She had wanted a marriage built on love, not money.

Now, the man who had once promised to stand beside her had allowed his mother to throw her out like a stranger.

Claire slowly closed the tablet.

“Prepare the final agreement,” she said.

Her assistant nodded. “And the conditions?”

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“Bennett International will consider saving Harrington Group, but I want one condition added.”

“What condition, madam?”

Claire walked toward the window, watching the city lights shimmer beneath the night sky.

“Eleanor Harrington must never again have the authority to interfere in the company’s affairs.”

She paused, then added in a voice as cold as winter.

“And Daniel must learn the truth about the woman he abandoned.”

For the first time that night, Claire smiled.

Tomorrow morning, the Harrington family would discover exactly whom they had driven away.

And Eleanor Harrington’s greatest mistake would finally begin to cost her everything.
