The Necklace of Betrayal

Part 2 – The Money Behind the Affair

Daniel arrived at my apartment less than an hour later.

He carried a thick folder and looked unusually serious.

“Claire, I need you to remain calm when you see these documents.”

I opened the folder.

The first page showed a list of bank transfers. Thousands of dollars had been transferred every month to an account belonging to Olivia Hayes.

But what made my stomach turn was the authorization signature.

My name.

My signature.

Except I had never signed those documents.

“How much money?” I whispered.

Daniel adjusted his glasses.

“Approximately 4.8 million dollars over two years. Some payments went directly to Olivia. Others were transferred through companies registered under your name.”

I stared at him.

“Why would Alexander do that?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I suspect he’s been moving money through accounts connected to your identity. If an investigation begins, you could be implicated.”

My hand instinctively moved to my pregnant belly.

“So he used me as a shield?”

“That’s what it appears to be.”

I felt sick.

For five years, I had defended Alexander whenever people questioned his business practices. I had believed his explanations, trusted his promises, and signed documents whenever his lawyers told me they were routine.

Now I wondered how many of those documents had been designed to destroy me.

“Daniel, I want everything investigated. Every company, every transfer, every signature.”

He nodded.

“There’s something else.”

He placed another document in front of me.

It was a property purchase agreement for a luxury penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan.

The buyer was a company registered under my name.

The actual occupant was Olivia Hayes.

I almost laughed.

Alexander had bought his mistress a penthouse using a company that legally appeared to belong to his pregnant wife.

“He’s going to claim I bought it for her, isn’t he?”

“Possibly. That’s why we need to act carefully.”

I looked at the documents again.

“Then let’s make sure he can’t.”

That afternoon, I contacted my personal banker and froze every account I legally had authority to freeze. Daniel also filed formal notices disputing the fraudulent authorizations and began preparing the evidence for the divorce proceedings.

I didn’t call Alexander.

I didn’t send him an angry message.

I simply disappeared from his life.

Or at least, I tried.

At 6:15 that evening, my phone began ringing.

Alexander.

I ignored it.

He called again.

Then a message appeared.

Alexander: Claire, stop being ridiculous. Come home. We need to talk.

Another message followed.

Alexander: I heard you contacted your lawyer. You’re making a mistake.

I stared at the screen before typing my first response.

Me: You should be more concerned about the documents Daniel has discovered.

He called immediately.

I answered.

“What documents?” His voice was sharp.

“The ones with my signature.”

Silence.

Then he laughed nervously.

“Claire, you don’t understand how business works.”

“Then explain why your assistant has received nearly five million dollars through companies registered under my name.”

His breathing changed.

“Who told you that?”

“Does it matter?”

“Listen to me. Don’t touch those accounts. Don’t contact anyone. I’ll handle everything.”

I closed my eyes.

“You’ve been handling everything for two years, Alexander. Look where it got us.”

“You’re pregnant. You’re emotional. We can discuss this when you calm down.”

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Even now, he was using my pregnancy to dismiss me.

“Goodbye, Alexander.”

I hung up.

But the following morning, something unexpected happened.

My doorbell rang.

When I opened the door, Olivia Hayes stood outside.

She wore a cream-colored designer coat, carried an expensive handbag, and had the diamond necklace around her neck.

She looked at me with a carefully practiced smile.

“Claire. Can we talk?”

I didn’t move.

“What do you want?”

She glanced toward the hallway.

“Alexander sent me.”

I laughed.

“Your employer couldn’t come himself?”

Her smile disappeared.

“He’s worried about you. He thinks you’re making decisions you’ll regret.”

I looked directly at her.

“Then tell him I’m doing perfectly fine.”

Olivia stepped closer.

“You don’t understand him like I do.”

For a moment, I simply stared at her.

Then I noticed something in her hand.

A small envelope.

She held it out.

“Alexander wants you to sign these papers. They’re just some business corrections. Once you sign, everything will be settled.”

I didn’t take them.

Instead, I read the company name printed across the top.

It was the same company Daniel had discovered in the fraudulent transfers.

I looked back at Olivia.

“Did he tell you what these papers actually mean?”

Her expression changed.

“Just sign them, Claire.”

I slowly shook my head.

“Get out of my home.”

Her cheeks flushed.

“You really think you can take everything from him?”

“No. I think he’s already given you everything that belonged to me.”

I closed the door.

Five minutes later, Daniel called.

When I told him about the documents, he became furious.

“Do not sign anything. Claire, those papers could transfer liability for the missing funds directly onto you.”

I gripped the phone.

“So that’s what he wanted.”

“Yes. And now we know he’s getting desperate.”

I looked toward the window.

For the first time, I wasn’t simply dealing with an unfaithful husband.

I was dealing with a man who might sacrifice his own pregnant wife to protect his fortune.

And I promised myself he would never get that chance.
