The Rancher’s Bride PART 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND HER NAME

The Rancher’s Bride
PART 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND HER NAME
Eliza stared at the photograph in Caleb’s hand.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Finally, she lowered her eyes.
“I was seventeen when I won that championship,” she said quietly. “My mother entered me without telling me. I competed against professional cooks from all over Montana.”
Caleb glanced at the photograph again.
“You won?”
Eliza nodded.
“I did. A hotel owner in Helena offered me a position as head chef. It was everything I had ever dreamed of.”
“Then why aren’t you working there?”
Her fingers tightened around the edge of the counter.
“Because my mother became ill. I couldn’t leave her alone. I turned down the position, and after she passed away, I never found the courage to start again.”
Caleb studied her face.
“You could have told me.”
Eliza gave a small, sad smile.
“I didn’t want you to marry me because of what I could do. I wanted someone who would accept me even if I was just an ordinary woman.”
Caleb stepped closer.
“Eliza, I didn’t marry a photograph or a cooking champion. I married you.”
Her eyes filled with tears.

Before she could answer, someone knocked loudly on the kitchen door.
It was Jack.
“Boss! We’ve got a problem.”
Caleb turned.
“What happened?”
“Mr. Whitaker from the neighboring ranch is here. He says he’s heard about Mrs. Morgan’s cooking, and he’s offering money to hire her.”
Eliza looked uncomfortable.
Caleb’s expression hardened.
“How much?”
“Enough to make a man forget his manners.”
A moment later, a wealthy ranch owner entered the dining room, wearing an expensive suit and carrying a leather briefcase.
“Mrs. Morgan,” he announced, smiling broadly. “I’ve been looking for someone with your talent. I can offer you a position managing the kitchen at my new hotel in Helena.”
Eliza was stunned.
Caleb stood beside her, his jaw tightening.
Whitaker opened his briefcase.
“Three times whatever your husband gives you. Your own staff, your own kitchen, and a salary worthy of your reputation.”
Jack, standing near the doorway, whispered, “Well, that’s a mighty impressive offer.”
Eliza looked at Caleb.
He didn’t tell her to refuse. He didn’t tell her to stay.
Instead, he simply said, “Whatever you decide, I’ll support you.”
For the first time, Eliza realized that her husband wasn’t afraid of losing control.
He was afraid she might never discover how much she was capable of becoming.
She turned back to Whitaker.
“Thank you, Mr. Whitaker. But I need time to think.”
The man nodded reluctantly.
“Three days, Mrs. Morgan.”
After he left, Caleb reached for her hand.
“Whatever happens, I want you to be happy.”
Eliza squeezed his fingers.
“And what if my happiness means building something here?”
Caleb smiled.
“Then perhaps it’s time Morgan Ranch had a proper kitchen.”
Neither of them knew that the biggest challenge was still coming.
Because someone in town had heard about Eliza’s championship.
And he was determined to make sure she never became successful again.
