The Wife He Lost

PART 3 — THE TRUTH HE NEVER EXPECTED

Three weeks passed.

I moved into a beautiful apartment overlooking Lake Michigan. Madison helped me decorate the nursery, and my lawyer began preparing the divorce papers.

Vincent, however, refused to accept the situation.

He sent flowers every morning, expensive gifts every afternoon, and messages every night.

I returned everything.

Then one Friday evening, my lawyer called.

“Claire, there’s something you should know about your husband’s company.”

I sat down.

“What is it?”

“During our investigation, we discovered that Sophia Reynolds has been receiving large transfers from one of Vincent’s private accounts. The payments started nearly two years ago.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“We’re still checking the details. But there’s something else. Some of the money was transferred through a company registered under her name.”

I felt cold.

For years, Vincent had told me Sophia was simply his assistant.

Apparently, there was much more to their relationship than I had ever imagined.

That evening, Vincent arrived at my apartment without warning.

He found me sitting on the sofa, holding a cup of tea.

“Claire, we need to talk.”

I placed the cup down.

“About what?”

He looked unusually serious.

“Sophia has been dismissed.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Congratulations.”

“She was stealing from the company.”

I said nothing.

Vincent sat across from me.

“I trusted her with too much. I should have listened when people warned me.”

I looked at him carefully.

“Did you ever love her?”

He hesitated.

That hesitation answered more than any confession could have.

“I was careless,” he finally said. “But you are my wife. You are the woman I chose.”

I smiled sadly.

“Vincent, choosing someone once doesn’t mean you get to neglect them forever.”

He lowered his head.

Then his eyes noticed a folder on the coffee table.

Divorce papers.

His expression changed immediately.

“You’re actually going through with this?”

“Yes.”

“What about our child?”

“Our child will have a father. But I won’t force myself to remain your wife.”

He stood up, visibly shaken.

“Claire, please. Give me one chance.”

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

It was the doctor.

“Mrs. Moretti, your recent test results are ready. We’d like you to come in tomorrow. There’s something we need to discuss.”

I frowned.

“Is something wrong with the baby?”

“It’s better if we explain everything during your appointment.”

Vincent immediately stepped closer.

“What happened?”

I ended the call.

“That’s none of your concern.”

“Claire, that’s my child!”

“And I am the one carrying it.”

He looked as though I had slapped him.

I picked up the divorce folder and handed it to him.

“Take these to your lawyer.”

He didn’t move.

Instead, he stared at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Fear.

Real fear.

“I’m begging you,” he whispered. “Don’t let me lose you.”

I looked at the man I had once believed I would grow old with.

“I didn’t leave you in one day, Vincent. I left you after five years of being alone.”

He stood silently as I walked toward the bedroom.

That night, he finally left.

But neither of us knew that the doctor’s appointment the following morning would reveal something that would change everything.

And when Vincent eventually learned the full truth, he would discover that losing his wife had never been his only mistake.

The biggest mistake was believing he was the only one who could decide what happened to their family.
