The Wife He Underestimated
Part 2: The Woman Behind His Empire
At 8:00 the next morning, Grant Mercer walked into Mercer Alder’s headquarters wearing a tailored navy suit and the satisfied smile of a man who believed the world still belonged to him.
Lila followed closely behind, carrying two coffees.
“Your wife will come crawling back,” she said. “Women like Evelyn always do.”
Grant smirked. “She’ll apologize before dinner.”
The elevator doors opened.
His smile disappeared.
Three lawyers stood outside his office, accompanied by Daniel Cross, the company’s chief financial officer.
“What’s this?” Grant demanded.
Daniel placed a thick folder on the desk.
“We’ve identified unauthorized transfers totaling twelve million dollars. Several documents also contain forged signatures.”
Grant’s face hardened. “Watch your words.”
“Your wife’s signature was used to authorize the largest transfer.”
“Then she signed it.”
“She denies it.”
Grant laughed dismissively. “Evelyn doesn’t understand half the paperwork she sees.”
One of the lawyers stepped forward.
“Mr. Mercer, we’re here on behalf of Evelyn Bennett Mercer, the majority shareholder of Mercer Alder Holdings.”
Grant stared at him.
“Majority shareholder?”
The lawyer opened his folder.
“Your wife controls fifty-eight percent of the company’s voting shares through Bennett Capital, a private investment firm established by her grandmother. Those shares were never transferred to you.”
For several seconds, Grant couldn’t speak.
He knew Evelyn had inherited money.
He had simply assumed it was gone.
“That’s impossible,” he finally said.
“No,” Daniel replied quietly. “It’s documented.”
Grant turned toward his CFO.
“You knew about this?”
“I knew who funded this company when the banks refused to lend you a dollar.”
Daniel’s voice grew colder.
“And I know who has been stealing from it.”
Before Grant could respond, his phone rang.
The caller was the chairman of the board.
“Grant, the board has received evidence of financial misconduct and reports concerning your behavior at last night’s gala. Your executive authority has been suspended pending investigation.”
“You can’t suspend me from my own company!”
“It’s not your company alone.”
The call ended.
Grant slammed his phone onto the desk.
Then he looked at Lila.
“Call Evelyn. Tell her to come here.”
Lila nervously reached for her phone.
But before she could dial, the office doors opened.
Evelyn walked in wearing an elegant cream suit, her dark hair neatly pinned back. A faint bruise remained beneath her makeup, and she moved carefully because of the pain in her ribs.
Yet there was nothing fragile about her expression.
Grant immediately stood.
“Evelyn. Finally. Tell these people there’s been a misunderstanding.”
She glanced at the folder on his desk.
“There has been a misunderstanding, Grant.”
Relief flooded his face.
She continued.
“You misunderstood my silence for stupidity. You misunderstood my patience for dependence. And last night, you misunderstood my love for permission to hurt me.”
His relief vanished.
“Evelyn, we can discuss this privately.”
“No.”
She placed a document before him.
“This is a formal notice demanding the return of funds taken from accounts connected to my investments. Your authorization has been suspended, and an independent audit is underway.”
He stared at her.
“You wouldn’t destroy everything we built.”
For the first time, Evelyn smiled.
“We?”
She leaned forward slightly.
“I built the foundation. You built your ego on top of it.”
Lila stepped between them.
“This is ridiculous. Grant made this company successful.”
Evelyn turned toward her.
“Then you shouldn’t have any trouble explaining the payments you received from company accounts.”
Lila’s face went white.

Evelyn slid another document across the desk.
It contained bank transfers, dates, and email records connecting Lila to the suspicious transactions.
“You thought I was too busy being a wife to notice what you were doing,” Evelyn said. “That was your first mistake.”
Grant grabbed the papers, flipping through them desperately.
Then he found something that made his expression change.
A transfer of twelve million dollars had been authorized using Evelyn’s forged signature.
But the money hadn’t gone where he expected.
The account had already been frozen.
And the trail led directly to an offshore company registered under Lila’s name.
Grant turned toward her slowly.
“What did you do?”
Lila stepped backward.
“You told me it was safe!”
“You said the account was under control!”
“You said Evelyn would never find out!”
Their voices rose, each desperate to blame the other.
Evelyn watched them in silence.
Then she turned toward the door.
“One more thing, Grant.”
He looked up.
“The police have a copy of last night’s security footage.”
His face drained of color.
“And two hundred witnesses saw what you did to me.”
She paused.
“You can explain your finances to the investigators. I’ll let the law handle the rest.”
Then she walked out.
Behind her, Grant shouted her name.
For the first time in their marriage, Evelyn didn’t stop.
But as she entered the elevator, her attorney sent her a final message.
We’ve uncovered something else. You need to see it immediately.
Attached was a scanned document from six months earlier.
It was a marriage-related legal agreement bearing Grant’s signature.
And beneath his name was a clause that made Evelyn’s blood run cold.
Grant hadn’t merely planned to take her money.
He had been preparing to declare her mentally unstable, seize control of her assets, and have her removed from the company.
The document had been drafted months before the gala.
Long before he kicked her.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Her husband hadn’t lost control last night.
He had revealed the plan he’d been hiding all along.
And she had only just begun to uncover it.
