The Wife Who Vanished PART 1: The Woman in His Wife’s Dress

The Wife Who Vanished
PART 1: The Woman in His Wife’s Dress
“Sorry for what?” Matteo Duca asked.
Lily Hart looked at him with frightened green eyes.
“For leaving you without telling you the truth.”
Before Matteo could demand an explanation, the ballroom lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every screen in the Blackwood Hotel went black.
A second later, a message appeared across the largest screen above the stage.
MATTEO DUCA, YOUR WIFE IS NOT THE ONLY PERSON IN YOUR HOUSE WHO HAS BEEN LYING TO YOU.
The music stopped.
Nearly four hundred guests turned toward the screen.
Matteo did not move.
He had enemies across three countries. Men who had sworn to bury him, politicians who wanted him imprisoned, and rival crime families who would gladly spill blood to take control of his empire.
But nobody had ever dared to threaten him at his own charity gala.
Nobody except someone who knew exactly where to strike.
His wife.
“Lock down the hotel,” Matteo ordered into his earpiece.
Within seconds, his men moved toward the exits.
“Find whoever accessed the screens. Nobody leaves until I say so.”
Then he turned to Lily.
“What else did Clara tell you?”
Lily shook her head.
“Nothing. I swear.”
“Think carefully.”
“She gave me an envelope.”
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
“Where is it?”
Lily reached inside the small black purse hanging from her wrist and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I was supposed to give it to you only if you recognized me.”
Matteo took it.
His name was written across the front in Clara’s unmistakable handwriting.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Clara standing in the garden of their estate, wearing a pale blue dress. Beside her stood Gabriel Rizzo, his security chief and closest friend.
Matteo frowned.
There was nothing unusual about the photograph. Gabriel had worked for his family for years. He had attended countless gatherings at the estate.
Then Matteo noticed the date printed on the back.
Three days ago.
Beneath it, Clara had written a single sentence.
Ask Gabriel what happened to the woman buried beneath our rose garden.
For the first time that evening, Matteo felt something dangerously close to fear.
Not for himself.
For Clara.
Their rose garden had been closed for nearly two months. When he had asked why, Clara told him the gardeners were replacing the damaged soil.
He had accepted her explanation.
Now he wondered what else he had accepted without question.
“Where is she?” he whispered.
Lily’s lips trembled.
“I don’t know.”
Matteo gripped the photograph.
“Did she tell you why she disappeared?”
“She said there was something she needed to find before it was too late.”
“Something?”
Lily nodded.
“Or someone.”
Before Matteo could ask another question, a gunshot erupted somewhere beyond the ballroom doors.
Screams filled the room.
Matteo immediately pulled Lily behind him as his men rushed toward the entrance.
Another shot rang out.
Then his earpiece crackled.
“Boss, we have a problem.”
It was one of his guards.
“What problem?”
A pause.
Then the guard spoke in a strained voice.
“Your private elevator has been accessed. Someone used your personal security code.”
Matteo’s expression hardened.
“Who?”
“We’re checking the cameras now.”
“Check faster.”
The guard swallowed audibly.
“Boss… the person who entered the elevator was identified by facial recognition.”
Matteo felt his blood turn cold.
“Tell me.”
“Gabriel Rizzo.”
Matteo slowly looked across the ballroom.
Gabriel was gone.
And so was the photograph.
Matteo glanced down at his empty hand.
He had been so focused on the gunshots that he had not noticed someone slipping past him to steal the evidence.
Someone who knew his movements.
Someone who had been standing close enough to touch him.
His gaze swept across the crowd.
Then he saw it.
Near the eastern corridor, a woman in a silver mask was hurrying toward a restricted exit. Her dark hair fell over one shoulder, and she wore the same pale blue dress as the woman in Clara’s photograph.
Matteo’s heart stopped for one beat.
“Clara.”
He pushed through the crowd.
The woman looked over her shoulder.
Their eyes met.
Even from across the ballroom, he recognized them.
His wife’s eyes.
She froze for half a second, and that was all he needed.
Matteo started toward her.
“Clara!”
She turned and ran.
He chased her through the eastern corridor, ignoring the shouts of his guards behind him. At the end of the hallway, he reached a service door just in time to see a black car speeding away from the hotel’s rear entrance.
He stood motionless beneath the flickering security light.
On the ground lay a small silver pendant.
The pendant he had given Clara on their first wedding anniversary.
He picked it up.
There was a folded note tucked beneath its clasp.
His hands tightened around the delicate chain as he opened it.
The message was short.
If you still love me, Matteo, do not trust the man who has protected you for nine years.
Beneath the words was a final line that made the world tilt beneath his feet.
And whatever you do, don’t dig beneath the roses. Our daughter is still alive.
Matteo stared at the note.
Their daughter?
They had never had a child.

At least, that was what Clara had told him five years ago, after the night she had been rushed to a private hospital and returned home pale, silent, and unwilling to discuss what had happened.
Matteo had believed she had lost their baby.
He had held her while she cried.
He had promised they would try again when she was ready.
But now, standing alone in the cold corridor, he realized something far worse than betrayal.
For five years, his wife might have been grieving a child who had never died.
And the man he trusted with his life might have known the truth all along.
Matteo lifted his phone and called his most loyal remaining operative.
“Bring a team to the estate,” he ordered, his voice dangerously calm. “Seal every entrance. Nobody leaves.”
“Understood, boss. What’s the objective?”
Matteo looked down at the note one final time.
“Dig up the rose garden.”
He paused.
“And if Gabriel Rizzo is there…”
His voice dropped to a deadly whisper.
“Bring him to me alive.”
Because before dawn, Matteo Duca intended to discover what his wife had sacrificed five years ago—and why the entire world seemed determined to keep him from finding his own daughter.
