The Wife Who Walked Away
PART 3 — THE FIRST TIME HE SAW HIS SON
Three days later, Dante finally found a lead.
One of his men discovered that Elena had rented a modest apartment in a quiet neighborhood on Chicago’s North Side.
No expensive cars.
No private security.
No luxury shopping.
Just a small second-floor apartment with a balcony overlooking a tree-lined street.
Dante drove there himself.
When he reached the building, he stood outside for several minutes, staring at the windows.
Then he saw her.
Elena stepped onto the balcony carrying Noah in her arms.
She wore a soft blue sweater, her hair tied loosely behind her head. She looked thinner than before, but there was something different about her expression.
She looked peaceful.
Dante stepped forward.
“Elena!”
Her head snapped toward him.
For a moment, she didn’t move.
Then she held Noah closer and disappeared inside.
Dante rushed up the stairs and knocked on the door.
“Elena, open it!”
“I have nothing to say to you.”
“Please. Just let me see my son.”
Silence.
Then the door opened a few inches.
Elena stood behind it, holding Noah against her chest.
Dante’s anger disappeared the moment he saw the baby.
His son.
Tiny fingers. Soft dark hair. A little face that looked surprisingly like his own.
“Can I hold him?” Dante asked quietly.
“No.”
The answer was immediate.
Dante swallowed.
“Elena, he’s my son.”
“And I am his mother. I was there when he cried through the night. I was there when he wouldn’t sleep unless I held him. I was there when I needed someone to help me, but you were nowhere.”
“I made a mistake.”
She gave a bitter smile.
“A mistake is forgetting an appointment, Dante. You left your wife and newborn son for four days to enjoy a vacation with your mistress.”

“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
She adjusted Noah’s blanket.
“You don’t know what it feels like to sit alone in a hospital room, watching other fathers hold their babies while yours doesn’t even answer his phone.”
Dante lowered his eyes.
“I want to make things right.”
“Then start by understanding that money cannot repair everything.”
He looked at the apartment behind her.
“Come home. I’ll give you whatever you want. A bigger house, more security, anything.”
Elena shook her head.
“I don’t want another house. I don’t want another diamond necklace. I wanted a husband who would come home when his child was born.”
For the first time, Dante had no answer.
Then Noah began to cry.
Elena gently rocked him, whispering to calm him.
Dante watched the scene with a painful expression.
“Please, Elena. Don’t shut me out completely.”
She looked at him for a long moment.
“I’m not shutting you out, Dante. I’m protecting the life I should have protected from the beginning.”
She closed the door.
Dante remained in the hallway, listening to his son’s cries slowly fade into silence.
But inside the apartment, Elena wasn’t crying.
She placed Noah in his bassinet and walked toward the kitchen.
On the counter sat a folder containing photographs, hotel receipts, private messages, and financial records connected to Vanessa.
There was also a document her lawyer had prepared that morning.
A divorce petition.
Elena picked it up and signed her name.
She had no intention of returning to the Moretti mansion.
And Dante still had no idea that the evidence she had collected could destroy much more than his marriage.
Because Vanessa hadn’t just been his mistress. She had been stealing from the Moretti family business for nearly a year.
