The Wrong Challenge PART 3 — THE MAN WHO CAME BACK

The Wrong Challenge

PART 3 — THE MAN WHO CAME BACK

I couldn’t sleep that night.

The photograph lay on the kitchen table in Leo’s house.

Daniel Brooks.

Three years earlier, he had been part of my team. He was the kind of man who could make everyone laugh even when the situation was hopeless.

During our final operation, Daniel had disappeared while helping two injured teammates reach the extraction point.

We searched for him until the mission was officially closed.

There had been no body.

No confirmed location.

Only silence.

I had spent months wondering whether I had made the wrong decision by leaving him behind.

Now Commander Vance was telling me he was alive.

The next morning, I received a call.

“Lieutenant Hayes?”

I recognized the voice immediately.

“Daniel?”

There was a long pause.

Then a familiar laugh came through the phone.

“Still answering like you’re expecting someone to give you an order?”

I closed my eyes.

“You’re alive.”

“Apparently, that’s still a surprise to everyone.”

My throat tightened.

“Where have you been?”

“I’ll explain everything. But first, I need to see you.”

We arranged to meet at a quiet veterans’ center outside town.

When I arrived, Daniel was standing near the entrance.

He looked older, thinner, and walked with a slight limp.

But he was alive.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he smiled.

“You got everyone home, Kalin. Just like Vance said you would.”

I shook my head.

“I thought I lost you.”

“You didn’t.”

He handed me a small folder.

Inside were photographs, medical reports, and an official letter.

Daniel explained that after the ambush, he had been captured and transferred to a remote detention facility. He had eventually been recovered during a separate operation, but his medical condition and rehabilitation kept him away from active service.

“I asked about you when I returned,” he said. “Commander Vance told me you’d finally come home.”

I looked down at the folder.

“Why didn’t you contact me earlier?”

“Because I wanted to tell you something in person.”

He opened the folder to the final page.

It was an official commendation recommendation.

My name was printed at the top.

I stared at it.

“What is this?”

“Your actions during that operation were never fully recognized. The review board reopened the case after my return. I gave them my statement.”

I shook my head.

“Daniel, I didn’t do it for a medal.”

“I know. But the people you saved deserve to have their story told.”

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

It was Leo.

“Kalin, you need to come to the gym.”

“What happened?”

“Jax has been talking to the local sports reporters. Apparently, someone recorded yesterday’s challenge, and the video is everywhere.”

I sighed.

“Leo, I told you I don’t want attention.”

“That’s not the problem,” he replied. “Someone has posted your military photograph online. They’re claiming you’re exaggerating your service record.”

My expression hardened.

“Who?”

“I don’t know. But there’s something else. A man just arrived at the gym asking for you.”

I glanced at Daniel.

“What’s his name?”

Leo hesitated.

“Captain Richard Cole.”

Daniel immediately stood up.

His face had gone pale.

“Cole?” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“You know him?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He was the officer responsible for coordinating our extraction during that mission.”

I frowned.

“What’s wrong with that?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“He was the one who ordered the rescue team to leave us behind.”

For a moment, the room seemed to disappear around me.

I remembered the radio transmission.

The abandoned extraction point.

The order that had nearly cost eleven people their lives.

Daniel looked directly into my eyes.

“Kalin, there’s something else you need to know. That mission wasn’t compromised by accident.”

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?”

He took a breath.

“Someone gave the enemy our location before we arrived.”

And suddenly, I understood why Commander Vance had been so determined to find me.

The past wasn’t finished with us.

And this time, I wasn’t going to let anyone rewrite what really happened.
