Thousands Build Towering Human Pyramids in Spain

A Spectacular Test of Trust and Teamwork

Thousands of people gathered in Tarragona, Spain, for one of the country’s most remarkable traditional competitions: teams attempting to build towering human pyramids known as castells.

The event took place on October 4 as part of the 30th edition of the major human-tower competition. Twelve leading groups from Catalonia took part, filling the arena with teams preparing to climb higher and higher.

Every Person Has a Role

A castell is built from the ground up, with large numbers of people forming a strong base before others climb onto their shoulders. The smallest and lightest participants usually make their way toward the top.

The spectacular structures can reach several storeys high, but success depends on every member working together. A single mistake or loss of balance can cause the entire tower to collapse.

Generations Take Part Together

The tradition brings people of different ages together. Adults form the foundations and middle sections while younger participants often climb toward the top of the structure.

For many participants, joining a casteller group is not simply about competition. It is also a way of belonging to a community and passing a centuries-old cultural tradition from one generation to the next.

Moments of Triumph and Tension

During the competition, some teams successfully completed their towers before celebrating with supporters. Other attempts ended in dramatic collapses as the structures lost their balance.

The falls can look frightening, but the teams use safety measures and protective equipment to reduce the risk of serious injury. The atmosphere quickly changes from tension to celebration when a difficult tower is successfully completed.

A Tradition Built on People

The castells are an extraordinary example of what people can accomplish when individual strength is combined with trust and coordination.

Standing high above the arena, the towers may look like feats performed by a few climbers. In reality, every person in the group plays a role. The success of the structure depends on hundreds of people supporting one another from the ground to the very top.
