Three Hikers Rescued Overnight After Becoming Lost in California’s Big Sur
BIG SUR, California — September 29, 2026 — Three hikers were rescued overnight from California’s Big Sur region after becoming lost in difficult terrain, with one member of the group experiencing a medical emergency.
A Satellite Device Brings Help
The hikers became lost on the evening of September 27 while in the Limekiln State Park area. Realizing they could not safely find their way back, they used a satellite communication device to contact emergency services.
The distress call triggered a coordinated response involving the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, Big Sur Fire and a military helicopter from Naval Air Station Lemoore.
Rescuers Worked Through the Night
A seven-member search-and-rescue team began moving through the rugged terrain on foot. Rescuers had to navigate difficult trails and clear overgrown vegetation while searching for the hikers in darkness.
At the same time, a MH-60S Seahawk helicopter known as “Lasso 3” was sent to the area to assist with the search from the air.

All Three Were Found and Airlifted to Safety
The hikers were located at approximately 12:30 a.m. Once the helicopter reached them, all three were airlifted out of the area.
The ground rescue team then continued its own journey out through the park in the dark, completing the operation around 4 a.m.
Officials Remind Hikers to Prepare
Officials emphasized the importance of preparation before entering remote areas. Hikers are encouraged to remain on established trails, carry navigation equipment and tell someone about their planned route and expected return time.
The incident also demonstrated how satellite communication devices can help emergency responders locate people when traditional mobile-phone coverage is unavailable.
