15-Year-Old Boy Who Moved From Ghana to New York Is Fatally Shot on His Way to School

A 15-year-old boy who moved from Ghana to New York just one year ago was fatally shot while walking to school in the Bronx. His father believes the attack may be connected to bullying the teenager had experienced, although police have not confirmed a motive.
Javits Frimpong was shot in the abdomen near Crotona Park on the morning of October 29, 2026. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found him near East 171st Street and Crotona Place. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he later died.
According to reports, surveillance footage showed the teenager running along the street as people dressed in dark clothing followed him. Three individuals were reportedly seen fleeing the area after the shooting. Police are searching for three teenage males in connection with the case. No arrests had been announced in the latest reports.
Javits had moved from Ghana to the United States in October 2025 to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong. His mother remained in Ghana. His family had hoped the move would give him the opportunity to receive a good education and build a future in America.
Thomas described his son as quiet, intelligent and devoted to school. He said Javits had previously complained about being bullied by other students. The father also told reporters that the school principal had contacted him shortly before the shooting to say that two students had been suspended following reports of harassment involving his son.
Thomas believes the bullying may have played a role in the killing. However, authorities have not publicly established a connection between the reported school incidents and the shooting. Investigators have not announced a motive or identified anyone as responsible.
The teenager’s death has devastated his family and drawn concern from the Ghanaian community in New York. His father had to deliver the heartbreaking news to Javits’s mother, who was still in Ghana.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa condemned the killing and said officials would work to pursue justice. New York authorities continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information to contact the NYPD.
A year after arriving in the United States with hopes for a new beginning, Javits’s life was cut short on an ordinary school morning. His family is now left seeking answers about what happened.
