5-Year-Old Theo Sabo Dies After Being Found Unresponsive in Family Vehicle

A family gathering that began with a baptism celebration ended in unimaginable tragedy when 5-year-old Theo Sabo was found unresponsive inside his family’s vehicle in Peoria, Arizona, on September 13.

Theo’s family had returned home from church at around 1 p.m. after celebrating the baptism of another child. The family was then hosting a gathering with relatives and friends.

Several hours later, family members realized that Theo was missing and began searching for him.

According to police, his mother, Anca Sabo, eventually found the little boy unresponsive inside the family vehicle. Family members immediately began CPR before emergency crews transported Theo to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities are investigating the death as potentially heat-related. Temperatures in the Peoria area reached around 105–106 degrees Fahrenheit that day. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet publicly released Theo’s official cause of death.

The tragedy took another devastating turn when Theo’s parents, Mihail and Anca Sabo, were arrested and charged with negligent homicide and child abuse.

Police said investigators believe there may have been a miscommunication within the family about who was responsible for getting Theo out of the vehicle after they returned home. According to court documents and reporting, Mihail told investigators that he had asked their 14-year-old son to get Theo out of the vehicle, while the teenager told police he did not remember being asked to do so.

The couple’s attorney, Leah Dodd, has described the incident as an “unimaginable tragedy” and argued that the charges do not reflect what happened. She said Anca called 911, participated in lifesaving efforts and cooperated with investigators after Theo was discovered.

Both parents appeared separately in court and were ordered to post $150,000 bonds. They were also prohibited from contacting each other, while being allowed supervised visits with their surviving children. The couple have four other children.

Meanwhile, friends and members of the community have rallied around the Sabo family. A fundraiser established to help with funeral expenses and other costs described Theo as deeply loved and asked supporters to stand with the family through their loss. By September 15, the campaign had received hundreds of donations.

There are no easy words for the loss of a 5-year-old child.

Theo’s siblings have lost their youngest brother. His parents are now grieving their son while also facing serious criminal charges. And the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.

The legal case will determine what responsibility, if any, his parents bear. For now, the facts remain incomplete, and the presumption of innocence applies to both defendants.

What is certain is that a little boy named Theo is gone, and a family is facing a loss that will change their lives forever.

Theo was deeply loved, and his family is now asking for prayers and support as they navigate an unimaginable loss.
