5-Year-Old Girl Killed in Texas Roadway Shooting as Mother Drove With Five Children
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — September 21, 2026

A 5-year-old girl was fatally shot while riding in a vehicle with her mother and four siblings in northwest Harris County, Texas, authorities said.

The girl, identified as Zah’Layah Walter, was inside the family vehicle when gunfire struck the car on Grant Road near Jones Road late Saturday night, September 19. She was transported by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Mother Was Driving With Five Children
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the mother, Monica Hicks, was driving westbound on Grant Road with her five children, all under the age of 10, when someone opened fire on the vehicle.

Zah’Layah was struck by the gunfire. Two of her siblings suffered minor injuries from shattered glass, while their mother was not physically injured.

Hicks told local media that she initially did not realize her youngest daughter had been shot. She stopped the vehicle and discovered Zah’Layah unresponsive before calling 911.

Suspect Arrested and Charged
Authorities announced Sunday that 47-year-old Jeremy Porter had been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Zah’Layah’s death.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said automated license plate reader technology helped investigators develop information that led to the suspect’s arrest. Porter was booked into the Harris County Jail.

Investigators have described the shooting as appearing to stem from a possible road-rage incident. However, Hicks has disputed that characterization, saying she did not believe she had exchanged words with another driver or cut anyone off before the shooting.

Investigation Continues
The investigation remains active as detectives work to establish exactly what happened before the gunfire.

Porter is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
