87-Year-Old Suspect Released in 1993 Double Murder of Harry and Megan Tooze in Wales
87-Year-Old Man Released After Arrest in 1993 Double Murder Case That Haunted a Family for Decades

A decades-old double murder case in South Wales has taken another unexpected turn after an 87-year-old man arrested in connection with the killings was released from the investigation, leaving police still searching for answers more than 30 years later.
Harry Tooze, 64, and his wife, Megan Tooze, 67, were found dead on their farm in Llanharry, near Cardiff, Wales, in July 1993. Their deaths shocked the local community and became one of the region’s most notorious unsolved murder cases.
According to reports, the couple had returned home after going shopping and collecting their pensions on the morning of July 26. Later that afternoon, neighbors heard two gunshots. At first, the sounds did not immediately raise alarm because the couple lived on a farm where such noises were not considered unusual.
Concern grew when the couple’s daughter, Cheryl, could not reach her parents by telephone. She contacted a neighbor before police were called to investigate.
Officers eventually discovered Harry and Megan’s bodies inside a cow shed on their property. Both had been shot in the back of the head, and their bodies had been concealed beneath hay bales. Investigators later suggested that the couple may have been killed elsewhere on the property before their bodies were moved.
The investigation initially focused on Jonathan Jones, who was dating the couple’s daughter at the time. He was

arrested, convicted of the murders and sentenced to prison in 1993. However, his conviction was subsequently overturned on appeal, and he was released.
Despite years of investigation, the killings remained unresolved.
In 2023, police reopened the case and began a renewed forensic examination of the evidence. The review eventually led to the arrest of an 86-year-old man in December 2025 on suspicion of involvement in the murders.
For investigators and the victims’ family, the arrest offered the possibility of a breakthrough in a case that had remained unanswered for generations.
However, the investigation took another turn in October 2026.
South Wales Police announced that the man, who had since turned 87, was no longer under investigation and had been released with no further action. Authorities said the decision followed a thorough review of the evidence gathered during the renewed investigation.
The development means that police are once again left without an identified suspect in the long-running case.
Detective Superintendent Mark O’Shea of the South Wales Police Major Crime Investigation Team reiterated that investigators remain committed to finding out who killed Harry and Megan Tooze.
Police have appealed to members of the public who may have information about the murders to come forward, even if they believe the details they remember are minor or no longer relevant after so many years.
For the family, the passage of more than three decades has not brought a definitive answer about what happened to the couple on their farm.
The release of the elderly suspect does not close the case. Instead, investigators continue to seek the evidence needed to establish who was responsible for the killings and bring long-awaited answers to the family.
